I think it's dumb guys that only bass fish and don't keep fish have to buy a fishing license.

You pay state tax, sales tax, property tax, register your boat, pay launch fees, AND have to pay money to catch and release fish?

If you're killing fish and eating them that's one thing, but if you're not taking anything home that's just boating.

Went hunting with my brother one time and we decided to take a ride about 60 miles on the side by side to get to special spot that we knew. I quit gunning hunting years ago so I was just along for the ride. Our gun cases are identical. So I grab the shells and he grabs the gun case and away we went. Three hours later we get there and go to load the gun. He brought my 300 win mag and I brought his 7mm shells. Good thing we had a cooler of beer for the ride back.

This is an awesome thread.  Grats to the OP on retirement, hope there's some great years of fishing ahead of you, I can't wait until I get there!

I haven't done anything boneheaded enough yet to make this thread, but one day I'm sure I'll have something to contribute!

Why yes, yes I have :)

We have to renew our licenses at the first of March and several years ago we had some nice weather hit in early march. Ice was off the ponds so I loaded up and hit some conservation ponds.

It dawned on me that I had forgot to renew my licenses at the same time that I seen the conservation agent pull up. Luckily, he said "Oh it's you, I thought I was going to catch someone fishing without a license". I asked him if he wanted to see mine and he said no!!

As soon as he left, I beat it back to our store and sold myself my license......... sometimes it pays to be a permit vendor :)

I'm not sure about other states, but in Minnesota, you can buy a 'conservation license' that costs half as much as a full license but only allows an angler to keep half-limits of fish. That's what some CPR anglers do around here. You could look into it.

Personally, I pony up the entire 30-some dollars for a full license because I know it goes directly to fixing up public boat accesses, of which there are more than 15,000 in the state. It's a PITA to travel to a lake only to find that the access is inaccessible for a heavy boat.

Heck, if I could ever get my mother in law to go for a boat ride, I can think of quite a few stupid things that may happen, on accident... :checkitout:

I drove to the lake with my 2 man once and didn't realize until I got there that I forgot the battery at home.

Just about a month ago I decided to explore a creek in my kayak. Got everything out and got the kayak on the cart before I realized I'd left my paddle at home.

A couple months ago, we had just launched the boat when my bilge pump kicked on, sure sign the plug wasn't it. We pulled the boat out and laughed while it drained out. Put the boat back in the water and the bilge kicked back on 5 minutes later. We started talking and neither of us put the plug in, again.

The boat plug fiasco made me spit my orange juice! That's just flat out funny.

First mishap, the anchor gets wrapped around her ankle... Then you fall into her and she goes over the gunwale.

Just last week I stopped at a rest area 50 miles from home (10 miles from the lake) when I realized my wallet (with license, ID, driver license, etc.) was still sitting on the kitchen table.

Done that with a .308 and 300 win mag rounds. I felt like an idiot.

I remind myself to NEVER snigger because I'm sure that sooner or later I'll do something as bad OR WORSE.

(For the record:  I DELIBERATELY left the drain plug out so as to give the bottom of the boat a good rinsing.)

you do realize its license fees that stocked a lake, maintain a lake, and possibly even built a lake that youre fishing on. how would you even launch your boat if there was no boat ramp built for you to use? oh, and you do know that sometimes fish die after you release them, even if they look good swimming away. and youre obviously biased towards bass fishing and catch and release, so what you think that only people targeting panfish, catfish, crappie, etc should be the only ones to pay fishing license fees to help maintain that lake? while you get to enjoy fishing it for free only because you target and release bass? and seriously, get realistic here, if youre riding around not fishing, youre boating. but if youre riding around tossing out lures or bait and trying to catch fish, regardless of species and regardless if youre releasing them, then thats fishing. and if someone has bought their license its their right to keep fish to eat if they so choose. who are you to tell me i cant keep a fish just because you believe in catch and release? im so sick of seeing this elitist attitude from so many(not all) bass fishermen, you know the one, where they think theyre so much better than everyone else because they catch and release...and now its taken a step further that you think you shouldnt have to buy a license? YOU make fishing look bad, not the guy who takes home a bucket of panfish or a stringer of catfish to enjoy on the table...

I've tied on many o' baits, and cut "THE TAG END" just to see it sink to the bottom or float away with no line attached to it.

  1. The plug thing done it once, my compadre and I were in such a "rush" that we launched the boat and stood there like a couple of idiots watching how the tub slowly filled with water.
  2. Compadre, drop the anchor ! compadre drops the anchor but it wasn´t tied to the rope
  3. Driving to a "new" lake we had a flat tire, no problem ! took out the jack, the wrench just to find out the damned tires had 1 "security" bolt and we didn´t have the right measure to pull it out
  4. Ok dokie compadre, we are set and ready to go ! ...... with no gas in the tank
  5. Ok dokie compadre, we are set and ready to go ! ...... without TM nor electronics because I forgot to charge the battery overnight
  6. When I used to hunt in one occasion I was hunting for rabbits, charge the shotgun 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 shells, load, 5 .... again, uh oh, that´s one too many, no problem, unscrew here to remove one shell just to see that sob spring fly 15 ft in the air and land 30 ft away on the middle of the field with knee high grass almost at dusk ....  believe or not,  I found it !

Got plenty more of those memories, like once I said to my friend Pedro, "God loves us, because he loves children and stupid people ..... just like us"

You obviously didn't read my post. We pay the US Forest Service or the lodge that is on the lake day fees so those pay for the boat launch. ODFW plants bass in one lake in this state. Other than that they put 8" rainbow trout in lakes that I have zero interest in. They also took our salmon population hostage as you can only keep their hatchery fish.

In my state as a bass fisherman I just fork over money to our state regulators to go after a fish family they wish didn't exist. Also all reservoirs were built for hydro power or flood control. Fish were never considered when they were built as some are being removed now because of the way they limit fish populations.

I took the key out of my boat to make spares and left them at home, and then headed 50 minutes north to Mille Lacs lake.

It was windy and wavy that day (as usual), so I wasn't about to head out with only the trolling motor like I might if it was a small lake.

Waste of a day and about $15 in gas.

Well that there answers your question.  One of the good things about retirement is that you don't have to get up on Monday morning and go to work after a busy weekend.   One of the not so good things is that you forget it's Monday.

Welcome to club..............The outweighs the bad by a lot............:dancing-baby:

Took my dad and my 2 man about 90 miles to the lake. Water was cold but it was a fairly warm day. Loaded the boat and I got in first and had him push us off I should have known better. The next thing I knew he was up to his  neck in the water and we were headed back home without a cast.
