I went out on my dock a few days ago to test out a new rod, newly tuned reel and some new line. I posted about this previously, so i won't go into detail.

Realized today that I do not have a current fishing license. In Illinois, our fishing lecense expires at the end of March. For at least 50 years I've bought a new license sometime in March. Not this year for some dumb reason.

Besides being scatter-brained, this tells you how much I've been able to fish this year. to date, this year has been my poorest year of fishing. Had too much other stuff going on. And, I just retired  at the end of 2015. What's up  with  that?

Retirement can be tricky ~ my most recent approach is not to prioritize what on my schedule but to schedule my priorities.

Hope you can get out on the water soon.

A couple of years back I was on the way to Trophy Country for a four day trip. Got most of the way there when I realized I had forgotten something.

I had more fishing tackle than i was going to use or need because,,, well just because. Had a cooler stocked with enough food for four guys for four days; another cooler full of adult beverages; rain gear, portable  depth finder, spare trolling motor,  first  aid kit,,  etc,  etc,  etc.

everyhting except clothing

had to backtrack to Hannibal to buy clothes and toiletries.

Done more stupid than that and not once, fortunately nothing wrong happened in any of the times stoopid beat me.

Moments like those are just a reminder for me that I´m not as smart as I know I am.

I have to agree with A-Jay. Things to do can get out of hand fast when you are retired. I envisioned spending 2 or 3 days a week on the water. HA! Too many other things need to be done. And if I can't find stuff that needs my immediate attention, my wife is more than willing to help.

Once I drove 1 hour 45 minutes to a lake with my canoe in the back of my truck. I had planned this trip for a week. I had never fished this lake before but I heard great things about it. Got there and put the canoe in the water, unloaded all my gear, pushed it off and jumped in only to realize I didn't bring my paddle. Yea, no paddle. So had to pack up everything and talked to a local to find the nearest walmart and bought a cheap paddle. Wasted 3 hours getting there and back cause the directions were not that great. Now I make a check list.

I have done a lot of things that are more stupid then that!  The nice thing about Florida, is at 65 you don't need a freshwater license any more.  There are benefits to being an old fart.   I did go to Lake Okeechobee one time and left the kill switch at home.  I couldn't understand why the big motor would not start.  Like many others, I ran down a canal and noticed water in the bottom of the boat.  No plug in!   I have lunched the boat by myself, and forgot to anchor the bow line to the trailer.  I watched while the boat drifted off down the canal.  That's just a few stupid moments over the last 40 years.

My mother once went to the bakery and then the post office with a bunch of bills to be mailed.  She dropped the pie in the mail slot and came home with the bills.  So it is a family thing!

I've never done anything remotely as stupid as any of this.  Also, I got land for sale if anyone is interested!  It's really good stuff!!

:P

Heres one that I got away with. I did some work on the trailer that required a portable drill. Work all done and 80 miles later the drill was laying right where I left it==on the tongue of the trailer on a flat surface and not locked onto anything.

i once drove about 1hr15min to the lake, got there before first light, everything was absolutely perfect....  then i realized i had left my kayak seat at home.  can't exactly get away without it either!!  i fished the small portion of the bank that i could so that it wasn't just a turnaround and go home deal, but i'd never felt so stupid!!

I bought one of those spinnerbaits at dicks sporting goods that aren't packaged and just hanging on the hook.. Tied it on and used it for a while and wondered why i kept losing fish on it. Looked at the hook and there was a plastic hook guard on the hook. Fail

A couple years ago I was taking the boat out of the water after a night of fishing. I always take everything out before I load it up, then put all the stuff back in when the boat is strapped up. So after strapping the boat, and re loading all my gear, I left the lake. When I get home, as I'm unloading everything, I realize I made a huge mistake. Loaded everything EXCEPT my rods/ reels and tackle. I left it sitting in the grass at the boat launch. And this is thousands and thousands of dollars worth of  gear. 5 rods/reels, 5 3700 boxes of lures, hundreds of tungsten bullet weights and everything. I hauled bass back to that lake so freaking quick, and luckily somebody had noticed it and put it in a safe place for me. Stupidest thing I've done but I really lucked out.

I have worried I would do that so I remove them all before I ever put them in my box.

And yes I have done some ignorant stuff just cant recall any of it during a fishing ordeal. I did open the door to a work van (not mine) next to a pole barn and didn't have it in Park I thought I did but no it was in Reverse. The owner of the van standing there talking to me, watched me wad the door up on a pole to the barn. I tried to get back in to hit the brakes but it all happened so quick. Talk about feeling like a donky.

I drove to the lake with my 2 man once and didn't realize until I got there that I forgot the battery at home.

Just about a month ago I decided to explore a creek in my kayak. Got everything out and got the kayak on the cart before I realized I'd left my paddle at home.

A couple months ago, we had just launched the boat when my bilge pump kicked on, sure sign the plug wasn't it. We pulled the boat out and laughed while it drained out. Put the boat back in the water and the bilge kicked back on 5 minutes later. We started talking and neither of us put the plug in, again.

A friend and I once drove 70 miles home after a successful night fishing trip only to realize that our fish were still on a stringer back at the river. That was a long night.
