Mathews08 Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 Ok I have decided to go with a Lew's Custom Speed Stick for my new worm rod. Now the part I'm not sure about is if I should get the one they label a worm rod which is a 7'0 Medium Heavy with moderate fast tip. Or should I get the 7'0 Medium Heavy with Fast Tip. It will mainly be used throwing a weightless fluke and at the most a light Texas Rig. So Ill let y'all decide. Thanks!!! Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted May 6, 2016 Super User Posted May 6, 2016 Well it depends on the cover you're fishing and the line being used along with the weights. In looking at the rods I'd say if you are fishing in any kind of cover with the T-rig I would go the mag medium heavy with the fast action. If you are fishing more open areas and you aren't going to be throwing anything over 1/2oz I may go with the medium heavy, mod fast because that rod is more like a medium power the way it is rated and I prefer fishing flukes with a medium power rod but I do throw them on a medium heavy when in cover. The other thing is the medium heavy fast is more in line with medium heavy specs, it is rated to 7/8oz which tells me it is more stout and would handle a wider range of lure weights, so that is which way I'd go. Super User Fishes in trees Posted May 7, 2016 Super User Posted May 7, 2016 Man up - make your own fishing rod decisions based on the conditions you think you'll be facing most often. Begging other people to make decisions about what rod for you to buy assumes that they know more about the varying conditions that you fish under that you do. Is that true? In that case my advice would be to buy them both and switch off from time to time until you decide which one you like. Go to the store and fondle, . . . er, handle them and make your decision. This is why I never purchase a rod via the internet unless I'm ordering a duplicate of one I already like. 1 Quote
jbrew73 Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 you may want to find some lews rods on the shelf and try them yourself. i usually fish falcon rods and have found the lews custom rods run quite a bit heavier than their ratings compaired to falcon.. Quote

You really want to get hands-on time with each rod you are thinking of buying. My advice is to take your reel in to a local store and ask if you can try it out on the rod in question. Get a feel for the balance, etc. And I'd suggest a MF or MXF tip with what you're throwing. Light TX rigs and such, I assume you will use lighter-wire hooks? Don't want or need too much heft in a rod. But see, that's me. I can't decide for you, only you can. Quote
Mathews08 Posted May 7, 2016 Author Posted May 7, 2016 I am not an experienced fisherman. I guess I'm just really wondering if a MH with moderate fast tip is good for texas rigs. Ill just order both I guess. All the shops I've called around my area don't have any in stock so thats why I came here to get yalls opinion. I have had problems missing fish with a medium rod with fast tip but I'm thinking a Medium heavy with moderate fast tip may be a better opinion but wanted to get a second opinion. Ill be the first to say that I am not a very good fisherman but I am trying to learn. Just looking for advice. If it helps any I mainly fish a river with very light grass if any. Quote
Jaderose Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 "I guess I'm just really wondering if a MH with moderate fast tip is good for texas rigs" Yes..unless you don't like it. And that is the point I believe that is being made. All the MFR.'s rating are different and every fisherman has his own touch. It seems apparent to me that THIS is the direction that you are wanting to go but you are second guessing yourself. Don't. Both will catch fish just fine. The fact that you are even having to choose tells me that you've done some research. Trust it. But I will say this.....do NOT buy a rod that you haven't felt in your hand. Better yet, do not buy a rod that you haven't put your reel on and felt in your hand and maybe even practiced a bit with. I have a rod that I bought sight unseen and although it's a veeeery nice rod, I'm not wild about it and do not use it that often. I simply have better choices that I prefer to fish with and I will probably wind up selling this rod. TRUST YOUR GUT based on your research and feel the rod. Quote
