I'm wanting a rod that will handle most of my lighter baits. I just purchased a Duckett Ghost 6'10" medium action a week ago and it snapped on a 1 pounder yesterday. I returned it and I'm going to move to a higher end Dobyns rod. I'm looking at a Dobyns Savvy Micro Guide 663c to replace it. I realize this rod is shorter by 4 inches, but I do most of my fishing from a bank or in a kayak. I'll mainly use it to throw spooks, poppers, light jigs, light Texas rigs, squarebills, flukes and senkos. All of these techniques are listed on Dobyns' website for this particular rod except for squarebills. It's possible that I'll get myself into a crankbait rod in the future, but seeing as squarebills are the main kind of crankbaits I throw, it would be nice if this rod would cover that as well. Will the action and power be similar to the medium/fast Ghost? Will this rod handle squarebills well? Give me your thoughts!

I own that exact Rod. Great fluke Rod for me! That Rod should definitely cover all those techniques except I wouldn't trust it with poppers. Maybe large Sammies and spooks. Anything with treble hooks I'd look at a Rod with a moderate taper. Something like the 684CB would be great for poppers small squarebills and a excellent jerkbait Rod.... Never handled the ghost...

If I were kayak- or bank-fishing, I'd want to go with longer rods, not shorter, for the added casting distance and ability to control hooked fish.

I think thats a good choice, maybe a but stiff for small poppers...but its tough to find one perfect rod for everything!!!

Funny enough, they list poppers as one of the secondary techniques on Dobyns' website. I was hoping somebody with the rod would give me their thoughts. How do you think it will do with squarebills if I need to use it for that?

I think I'll pull the trigger and see how it handles. Thanks for the input!

I said that I'm fishing. I never mentioned that I'm catching fish :P

I'll consider that, but in some of the areas that I fish, a 7' rod can be a real PITA

You're welcome bro! It's a solid rod. Large poppers maybe same as I said with spooks and Sammies but little PopRs and Ricos I don't see it casting good and it's too stiff for the trebles IMO. Some guys like M/XF for jerkbaits, I tried that and more fish came off then I could count. If it has trebles I'm using moderate taper. That's just me.

A 3 power Savvy will handle most treble hook baits just fine. The Savvy, while listed as fast, fishes more like a traditional mod-fast action but just a hair faster if that makes sense. The exception being the 735 and 766 which fish as listed. The Savvy line make really good moving bait rods. Not my first choice for bottom contact baits but they will get the job done just fine if wanting one rod to do everything.

I'm considering the 663 for now and a Savvy Micro 704 for Jigs, Texas rigs, Buzzbaits, Chatterbaits, etc. Those baits (along with the spooks, poppers, squarebills, spinnerbaits, flukes and senkos) will complete most of the fishing that I do. What are your thoughts on that 2 rod setup from Dobyns?
