mrmacwvu1 Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 is too early to mow your yard? I try to never mow my yard earlier than 9 am unless I know the rain is coming. I was recently told that it was too early not by neighbors but by a 20 something that said he would call the cops if someone mowed their yard that early because he likes to sleep in until noon on the weekends. I grew up on a farm and had to feed cattle before going to school an hour early to lift for football or baseball. I still get made fun of because most nights I am in bed before 10PM. I am just used to getting up early. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 5, 2016 Super User Posted May 5, 2016 Your town should have noise ordinances based on zone. Usually noise curfew starts at 10 PM, and ends at 7 AM. Never mind that even within that, an insistent citizen can get a cop to charge you with disorderly conduct for just about anything. I've successfully fought several such when much younger, involving band rehearsals that were within reasonable hours (5-8 PM). Quote
Super User fishinfiend Posted May 5, 2016 Super User Posted May 5, 2016 My neighbor is loud in evening so i cut grass at 6am saturday morning. 4 Quote
S. Sass Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 My daughter was telling me just the other day about a coworker having a issue with her neighbor. He was mad at her for not selling him an adjacent lot of land so he started his lawnmower duct taped the handle so it would stay running and parked it as close to her bedroom window but still on his property. She said he siphoned gas from his truck 3 times to keep it going. He started this at 6am one Saturday morning. Some people are just deserving of a good old fashioned kick in the butt. Quote
mrmacwvu1 Posted May 5, 2016 Author Posted May 5, 2016 i get along with all of my neighbors. I just laughed at the thought that someone would call the cops if their neighbor was trying to mow before noon. 2 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 5, 2016 Super User Posted May 5, 2016 I have a another 16 years on my mortgage. Making enemies with my neighbors is not in the agenda. I have band rehearsal in my basement studio two to four times a week. No one has ever complained. Yes, they can hear it loud and clear, because I asked if they could. Still, no complaints. Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted May 5, 2016 Super User Posted May 5, 2016 When I was much younger, if my neighbors peed me off, I would tend to put megadeath on, press the repeat all button, turn the volume up just enough to be heard, and go out for the day/night. Ahhhh...apartment living. 2 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 5, 2016 Super User Posted May 5, 2016 i cut my grass whenever i feel like it but it is rarely before 8. I figure my closest neighbor likes to start his harley and let it warm up for about 30 minutes whenever he rides and those hours are all over the map. And on a side note, aren't harley's air cooled and it probably not be the best idea to let them warm up for that length of time? Oh, and if a person complains about me cutting my grass when i decide to cut it, I would smile and say ok not a problem, when would you be available to come cut it then. 1 Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted May 5, 2016 Super User Posted May 5, 2016 We start mowing at around 6:30 in the summer at work and no complaints to date......we don't start in the nice neighbourhoods tho 1 Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted May 5, 2016 Super User Posted May 5, 2016 I mow my lawn on my schedule, not on my neighbor's. 4 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted May 5, 2016 Super User Posted May 5, 2016 The best time of the day to mow is late in the day or during the evening. The fact is that mowing damages the plant and it will take a day or two for the grass to fully recover. Mowing in the evening provides about 12 hours of respite for the grass from the sun. Mowing in the morning means that the stressed grass will be subjected to the sun much quicker and if there is morning dew on the lawn the grass will be cheated from the rejuvenating effects of the moisture because mowing will hasten evaporation. In short, the best time to mow the grass is when it needs it – keeping in mind the 1/3 rule and one should mow in the evenings to reduce stress on the grass. A-Jay 1 Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted May 5, 2016 Super User Posted May 5, 2016 First and foremost, i'd mow when i felt like it, until the cops showed up and told me otherwise. BUT in the interest of being polite and within the "rules", find out how early the trash company is allowed to begin pickup services around here some places don't allow them to begin until 7AM. If it's good for them, it's fine to mow in my opinion. Lastly, you say not by neighbors, but by a 20 something. Does this mean that the 20 something isn't one of your neighbors? If he's not even a neighbor, I don't know why i would even care. Quote

Super User Gundog Posted May 6, 2016 Super User Posted May 6, 2016 If you wanna end this problem I suggest Astroturf or just pour concrete over the backyard and paint it green. As far as when its too early to mow the lawn, what do I know. I live in a town where I swear nobody owns a car with a muffler. I got one neighbor who is a tractor trailer driver and brings his work home with him. I got another neighbor who likes to sing 80's tunes on his front porch at 4am. What I need is earplugs and a shot of NyQuil. 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted May 6, 2016 Super User Posted May 6, 2016 On my street I have the opposite problem. It's all about who has the nicest yard. If one person cuts the grass then everyone has to cut the grass. Some of the yards have already been fed twice so the grass grows like crazy. It is not uncommon to see my neighbors cutting grass 2X a week. 1 Quote
MDBowHunter Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 Unless they're going to make my mortgage payments. I'm mowing when I feel like it. 3 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 8, 2016 Global Moderator Posted May 8, 2016 I'd like to mow at 2-4 AM a few times, just so the neighbors know what it's like to have someone mowing when you're trying to sleep Better than when they were jackhammering the whole parking lot of the gas station right behind my house all day a few weeks ago. Unless your laws are different than ours, there's nothing police can do provided you're not violating city ordinance. 2 Quote
Hurricane Posted May 8, 2016 Posted May 8, 2016 Once the grass dries from the dew, the mower is on. Usually mow on a Saturday so i can fish Sunday.. Or it changes with the weather. Quote
Super User Raul Posted May 10, 2016 Super User Posted May 10, 2016 I mow once a week on Saturday at a around 5 PM during the "winter", I mow twice a week at around 6 PM Saturday and Tuesday during "spring", during "summer and autumn" I mow once or twice a week if the weather allows me after the grass has barely dried because who knows ? it may rain again in a matter of minutes ( you won´t see my lawn look like a carpet during those seasons ). Super User J Francho Posted May 10, 2016 Super User Posted May 10, 2016 I think this is one of those, "do unto others as you'd do unto yourself" type of deals. 1 Quote
