Jaydoublewho Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 Im hittin the water on saturday. Its suppose to be 63 and partly cloudy after about a weeks worth of on,off rain. Ill be fishing from the bank of a pond and maybe a river pending how things go at the pond. Does anyone have any tips or pointers for a beginner. Thank you Quote
YakSlayer Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 Well depending on water clarity, i would definitely take some plastics. Some type of dark senko, crawdad, etc. Since you mentioned rain on and off, i assume the trees, branches, grass will be out of wack for a little bit so best to rig it weedless. I would also take a popper, buzzbait or some other topwater just in case the fish are being lazy and need a little encouragement. This could also vary depending on your location as well. 2 Quote
Jaydoublewho Posted May 5, 2016 Author Posted May 5, 2016 Thank you YakSlayer i think i need to hit the bait shop befor i go my tackle is very limited at the moment being that ive just recently branched off of my norm of fly fishing. Water clarity in the pond is usually pretty clear but in the river right now its bad and high and fast. Should i avoid the river? Quote

The thing with buzzbaits is that the color shouldnt matter. The blade is doing the work and causing the fish to be nosey and kill that thing making noise. I personally have a chartreuse colored buzzbait. Like mentioned above, lipless crankbaits and the like are good to have. I always go down the aisle to see if theres a sale going on. Remember not to get something that doesnt look natural..a buddy of mine had a crank bait that had a number 6 on it and looked like mark martins old stock car in nascar. He has never to this day caught anything on it. Best rule of thumb that i like to use, Keep different colors in your tackle arsenal. Also look up some youtube videos like 1Rod1Reel fishing and Lake Fork guy..they have tons of good tips and show you what to use and when and how to retrieve it. Hope that helped. Quote
Jaydoublewho Posted May 8, 2016 Author Posted May 8, 2016 Thank you again YakSlayer i did find myself at the bait store this morning and i picked up a couple buzz baits ive got a few lipless cranks tthat were handed down to me from family. All my tackle is of natural color for the simple reason of i dont like wacky colors i dont see why fish would. Today when i hit the big pond i couldnt get the fish to take anything. A guy that was there told me to use a jig around some fallen trees and through some weed cover and i looked at him like he was purple (i knew nothing about jigging) he gave me a quick 1,2, on jigging and helped me alot. And somehow i grabbed 2 large mouth out of there. Then tonight while catfishing (something i frequently do) i was using a nice fat nightcrawler. And right around 1am i felt a nice tug. So thinking ive got a kingsize kitty on my hook i went to town to find out it was large mouth number 3 for the day. Very productive day today and i think im going to pursue more about using jigs. Theyre difficult and different and thats how i like it. Quote
