Spinnerbait Setup?

Hello,

I'm gaining confidence in spinnerbaits again and am considering building a dedicated combo.

What rod action and rating do you prefer?  Or do you just use the same rod for spinnerbaits that you do for another moving lure?

It depends in the spinnerbait. For double willow blades around a 1/2 oz or less I like a 7'3 medium heavy rod. For big single Colorado blades upwards of 1 oz I like  a 7'6 heavy rod . Mod-fast or fast action.

I've been using my jig rod, which is a different setup than most like for jigs.  It's a MH/F, but the tip is relatively soft compared to others.

I do have a 7' Daiwa MH/F rod laying around.  I've used it mostly for frogs, but I'd like to get a H/XF for that this year.  I think I might just make that rod into a spinnerbait setup.

My old pistol grip rod I used for most of my teenage years was a MH/F, and designated a spinnerbait rod.  It's been retired.  These days, I like rods to match my techniques, and I'm exploring the current mode of thought regarding spinnerbaits.

I am currently using a MH 7'0" rod.  I throw spinnerbaits between 1/4 and 1/2 ounce on it.  I have used a 6'6" in the past, but with the 7'0" rod I can get a little more distance.

I use a 7' mhf rod with braid to flouro leader. I've tried softer actions and other lines and really like the extra feel with this setup.

I think this is what I will be doing, though a mono leader will probably be more appropriate for me.

Josh, I'll throw spinnerbaits on just about any rod.  Well maybe not my new crankbait rod.    I do have one dedicated spinnerbait rod.  I bought a 6' MHF Lightning and Daiwa Procaster 100HN for my oldest grandson when TW was closing out the reels a few years ago.  He has no interest in trying a baitcast reel so guess what...I got another combo.    I use it for throwing mainly 1/2 oz. spinnerbaits at what are short ranges for me.

I use 2 rods mainly for my spinnerbaits. The first is my main rod and it's a 6' MH/F BPS Johnny Morris Signature series rod. I loads well enough for me to cast far enough, but I love using it around cover as it keeps my casts on point. I also used a 6'6" St. Croix Mojo MH/F as well and was a great rod for them. Unfortunately it was laid to rest after I accidentally snapped it under a tie down cleat so it'll be replaced in a few days with a 6'8" MH/F Mojo. The extra length allows me to get a little more distance when I need it, but still keeps my accuracy in check.

Loomis GL2 6'8" SBR, Shimano Scorpion Antares, and I'm trying 12lb Yo-Zuri hybrid this season. Usually I'm throwing 12lb Trilene XL. 

That covers all weights and blades.

I use a MH with braid. I like braid cause I'm usually throwing them into pretty gnarly cover.

I love the spinnerbait so I always have a dedicated rod for it. Just picked up the Megabass Levante Spinnerbait rod and I paired it with a Scorpion 1500XT . 12# Sufix Elite ....  love it.

My spinnerbait rod is a 7' 2" MH/F with a 200B Curado and 15lb Big Game.

7'  MH/F Mojo with Lew's LFS for 3/8 and bigger. Under 3/8oz I use a 6'6" Team Diawa-V MH spinning rod. But it feels more medium than heavy.

I use a 6'6" MH-F as my target spinnerbait rod and to be fair, I've tried cranking rods with spinnerbaits and I just didn't care for them, especially in cover. So for me it was always the fast action in a medium heavy but I found what I consider to be the best rod for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits that I ever used. I got a 6'9" heavy power Hammer rod over the winter, I got it to handle large topwaters like Super Spooks and other walking baits over 1/2oz, it is stout and pretty stiff when working the bait but when you hook up the rod has a mod-fast action. So being too early for topwaters I put it to use with the chatterbait first and then the spinnerbait, the result is no lost fish and plenty of power to rip the bait free from grass and through cover, truly the best of both worlds.

What, in your views, are the pros and cons of braid vs mono or fluoro when fishing spinnerbaits? I like braid for most things but do still use mono when it's called for.

I prefer a MH/MF action rod, length is up to you, I currently use a Daiwa Tatula 7' 2" MH/R for spinner baits.
