I cant wait for may 8th when fishing opener for Minnesota finally kicks off.

Seems like every other state is already fishing for every type of fish

Does anyone know why the season opener is so late and if there is any information on changes?

thanks

I couldn't live in a place where the season was closed like it is there. No closed season in Texas or Florida and their bass seem to be doing alright.

Its so tough

Went out yesterday and day to many good spots for bass that I would have loved to fish but because of the dumb MN DNR we aren't allowed to fish them

I believe MN and WI are the only 2 states left with restrictions on bass fishing

Opener is 5-14, not 5-8.

It's 2 weeks earlier than it has been in previous years due to our spring coming earlier nowadays. It used to be the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. This new routine began in 2015 to good reviews.

So from 5-14 to 5-28, it's catch and release only. After that, it open season for the meat hunters.

Yessir. Milwaukee boy here. Our opener is this Saturday.

Our bass season is only closed for like a month and a half, and ice out isn't generally until late March, so we only have a month of down time. It still sucks, we should at least be able to catch and release.

If you're catching and releasing, how do they even determine what species you were targeting with any certainty?

All gamefish in Wisconsin except for a few bodies of water is closed from sometime in March through the first Saturday in May. If you're fishing with a spinner, crank, anything like that, you're obviously not pan fishing, so it's pretty easy to tell you're poaching.

Also, DNR here play hide and seek. A few times I've been fishing a bank and a game warden comes popping out of a bush as soon as I pull in a fish and ask's for my license etc.. It's pretty annoying, it seems like they are more interested in hassling the good guys instead of catching snaggers, or people netting in the rivers...

Many years ago some fishing areas around the St. Louis area were only open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.  It really stunk.

I would lose my mind if I had to wait that long... I would put a pond in my backyard if there were rules like that here..

A closed season on fishing?? What? You can't go at all, or not for bass only ?

Yeah in MN there is a close season where you cant fish for bass, northern, muskie, or walleye.

Panfish is open all season I believe.

In Pennsylvania the law use to be that bass season started in mid june but walleye/pike/musky season opened early may. I would go out in may and when I was stopped by the guppy cops and they asked what I was fishing for I would tell them pike or musky. Only once did they question the lure I was using (bass type spinner bait). I told him I caught 3 pike on it so far and I'm not gonna change it. I'm so glad PA got smart and opened the season all year round. We still have some restrictions in some areas but its better than the way it use to be.

What are the laws regarding bass season in NY state? I heard they, at one time, had some lakes you could fish for bass year round and some lakes you could not. Did they go to a state-wide open season?

The season for all gamefish aside from panfish and catfish is closed from roughly the end of February until mid-April.

This (hopefully) protects the spawning window, and it also gives the fish a much needed break after the ice fishing season, where the fish, especially walleye and crappie, take an incredible beating from anglers. Catch and release is practiced much more often is the summer, but is nearly unheard of in the winter.

Fish are remarkably easy to catch through the ice on Minnesota's natural lakes, which are often weedy and green-tinted during the open-water season, but crystal clear and devoid of any protection for the fish during the winter because the weeds are all gone. The fish also tend to school and really stack up over the warmer, deeper basins of the lake, so they're very vulnerable to over-harvest.

This is a crappie hole on an average lake near my house this February.

You'll see surprisingly few bass anglers doing that. People generally respect the conservation laws up here.

The New York State general fishing regulations state;

  • "A person may not fish for a species (even if immediately released) during the closed season for that species on a given water. Fish caught during the closed season must be unhooked and released immediately. They may not be handled for any other purpose."

You might be careful when admitting to violating fishing regulations on an internet forum.

You do have rules like that in New York.

Bass season in NYS is now all year round, but from December until the third weekend in June it is artificial lures, and catch and release only.

This is kind of funny, but the season is closed here until this Saturday, I bought a few new buzz baits and I was at a drainage ditch that holds no fish, just testing the baits. Some guy rolls up and says he called the DNR on me. LOL
