G3 Fan Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 I went through about 5 Zoom Horny Toads in an hour the other night. I was lucky to get two fish on one before they were ruined. The problem was that the center of the bait was getting ripped open. Right along the hook groove. I am guessing that when I set the hook the hook was tearing it. Is this to be expected or am I rigging them wrong? I am rigging them Texposed. I didn't know if I should try pegging the hook eye or something to keep the hook from being able to move. Quote
ben watson Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 what type of hook are you using? i use 5/0 gama ewg, also just a suggestion manns hardnosed toads really can take a beating, one time i caught 4 big pickeral and 3 lm bass and i still have the frog Quote
G3 Fan Posted May 24, 2007 Author Posted May 24, 2007 I have been using 4/0 EWG hooks, I think I will try those Mann's. I bought some of the Hard Nose Lizards this spring and was really impressed with how long they lasted. Thanks Quote
armesjr Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 Use the horny toad hooks, that have the little screw by the eyelet. You can catch a lot of fish before the frog tears up using those hooks. Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted May 24, 2007 Super User Posted May 24, 2007 I agree. Use the hooks with the corkscrew. MUCH better! Quote
gatrboy53 Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 also get some softbait glue or even super glue and glue em back together.use a bead in front of the hook it helps a little. Quote
Banor Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 You dont have to use the horny toad hooks. You can buy the cork screws seperately from BPS. I would not use less than a 5/0 and definately an EWG. The 5/0 rigs up better and I havent had a problem going through frogs. Generally my issue is after a few fish the cork screw has chewed up the nose. IMHO the horny toads action is slightly different than the Mann's Hard Nose. I prefer the horny toads. I would not base my decision on which one to throw because they tear up. I'd use different hooks or rig differently. Stick with the horny toads! Just my personal opinion. B Quote
Autiger1291 Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 I'm having the same problem man. Went through two bags on 15 bass. The Toads were all they wanted and I was out. I just took all my old ones(they had ripped at the nose) and melted them back together with a lighter. It bought me one more fish per frog. Rigged with a 4/0 gammy EWG. If I was you I would not change to the Mann's Toad. The Horny Toad has better action and it has the double threat of a subsurface bait. I'm thinking about picking up some Zoom Horny Toad Hooks. They are supposed to help alot. Quote
G3 Fan Posted May 24, 2007 Author Posted May 24, 2007 Thanks to everyone for the great advice. I have a BPS gift card so I am thinking I will be buying some hooks and I might go ahead and get a pack of the Mann's just to see how they behave. Thanks again. Quote
Super User Raul Posted May 24, 2007 Super User Posted May 24, 2007 You forgot to add a bottle of soft bait glue to that list. Quote
