rvafishing Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 Caught this fatty on the James at Robious Landing Park. I was using a Texas rigged rubber worm and 1/8oz bullet weight while fishing a submerged tree near the shore line. 4 Quote
RVA_Bass_Fisherman Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 Well done! I've fished the James in a couple of different RVA locations from the banks with no luck in the past week. Did catch 2 small LMB today in a pond just south of the city, though. Nice catch! 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted April 30, 2016 Super User Posted April 30, 2016 Very nice! Every time we drive over the JR Bridge on our way to soccer tournaments in Richmond, my boys (and I) want to drive down and fish it. Anyway, some day. 1 Quote

rvafishing Posted May 1, 2016 Author Posted May 1, 2016 Thanks all! This is my first big catch of the season so far. I'm limited to public parks and pond fishing for now until I get a boat. If anyone is looking to fish in the area, let me know. I'm always up for finding new spots or just shooting the breeze while we fish. 2 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted May 1, 2016 Super User Posted May 1, 2016 Nice Bass ~ Congrats Looks like you kind of surprised yourself there with that bass selfie . . . A-Jay 2 Quote
heyitskirby Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 That's a good catch for that stretch of river. I never had great luck through there but all my best catches were across from where you were fishing. Got irritated enough with all the jet skis and pleasure boaters I quit going out there even though Watkins is the closest landing to my house. Went out near the Hardware River on Friday with a buddy on his river boat, it still amazes me what you can get through with a jet motor. Caught three decent smallmouth right at the beginning of the morning, but the bite turned off pretty quickly. AND FYI for anyone who fishes up river, looks like the bass (smallmout at least) are already off of their beds. 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 1, 2016 Super User Posted May 1, 2016 Don't you mean "The HISTORIC James River"??????? Good job. Congrats. Fishing the upper Historic James is always fun as it is not a tidal river and flows the same most of the time, fast and slow. Sorry to have to write that there are not many places to fish from the bank from Bosher's Dam up to Watkins Landing. The Robious Landing Park is one place; the American Legion Post is another, when it is open, and then Watkins Landing area along the bank is a third. Let us know how you do in the future along the bank of the river. 19 hours ago, flyfisher said: I have lived in Richmond for over 10 years and i have yet to fish for LM in the James. All that being said, nice fish Put in at Watkins Landing and go upriver for smallies and down river for largemouth. Watch the river's flow so if you go down river you don't need to have a problem getting back to Watkins. On a day when the water is flowing slowly you will have a blast and you can join the other kayakers who are on the water having fun. 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 1, 2016 Super User Posted May 1, 2016 I have floated the upper James many times for smallies and it is a great time for sure. I have learned my lesson to watch water flow levels and usually i prefer to put in downstream of where i want to fish and paddle upstream and float back, much easier after fishing all day Quote
