Pella Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 title says it all. Any recommendations are appreciated. I want to stick with a BassPro brand. I bought a boat and got the VIP member ship for 2 years. That gives me 20 percent off of basspro brands and 10 percent off everything else, excluding things on sale. Also, what other techniques will this rod cover? I have 3 baitcasters right now but they are all MH 6'6" and have 6:3.1 reels. Quote
"hamma" Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 pro qualifier and tourney special come to mind, id imagine you could use a flippin stick for frogging, and maybe alabama rigs as long as its heavy enough 2 Quote
Super User Gundog Posted April 29, 2016 Super User Posted April 29, 2016 Flipping and pitching requires a heavy or xtra heavy rod, usually over 7', with a fast or xtra fast tip. I agree with Hamma, frog fishing and the a rig are 2 other techniques that go good with a big, heavy rod. 1 Quote
Pella Posted April 30, 2016 Author Posted April 30, 2016 I bought a new rod and reel tonight. I frickin scored nice on this one. I got my flippin and pitching/ frog rod. I went to Bass Pro earlier this evening and got the Johnny Morris Carbonlite rod, a 7 footer, medium heavy. With a Bass Pro, Pro qualifier reel, 7.1:1 left handed retrieve. The best part was the price. Rod was $130. Reel was $110. That is $240 for the combo. I was talking to dude at the reel counter and asked why the BP website has Johnny Morris combos but the store doesn't. He said he would "do me right" for the combo. I told him "awesome, thank you". I went to go some lures, frogs and line. I brought him back some 65lb braid and he spooled it up for me. I went and did some more shopping. Since I bought my boat there I got the Bass Pro VIP membership. 20% off of Bass Pro label products, and 10% off everything else. So I go up to the counter to pay for everything. I got a bunch of new baits. Prob 15 lures and a couple bags of soft plastics and a couple other things I need. The total price was well over $400. I noticed my $240 rod/reel combo now has a $169 price tag. Then I dropped my 20% off VIP card on Art. He said "you got me lol, your stealing this rod and tackle". I basically got the rod/reel combo for a $100 discount. Im spooled up with 65lb braid and I cant wait to hit the slough tomorrow. Even after the rod/reel was discounted to $169 and all the baits I got, the total came to $400. I walked out paying $240 for everything. 1 Quote
Super User Gundog Posted April 30, 2016 Super User Posted April 30, 2016 Awesome score. It never hurts to ask about stuff like discounts and combos. Don't forget to post some pics of the hawgs you get with your new setup. Quote
Jaderose Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 Pro Qualifier on an Extreme Rod...which happen to be on sale right now.......this Model....EXR76MHT. 7'6" MH Extra fast. Should be a good system for you. The extreme pairs nicely with the PQ and I like the Power Hump handle. Some may not. This give you a good set up that is built like a tank. Not the lightest set up you'll use or the most refined but it will get the job done well and will be a joy to use if you like the feel of everything. Just my .02 Have them spool it up with some Power Pro....I like the slick but it costs more backed with half a spool of of their cheap house mono. You, my friend will walk out ready to fish and no..I don't work for BPS. I just like this particular stuff and have had good luck with it. Certainly do NOT buy something blindly based on my or any one else's recommendation. Pick it up....put reels on it....find someone that actually knows what he/she is talking about and ask questions. I have found that it doesn't matter how much something costs or how "nice" it is.....if I'm not comfortable using it, I won't. Quote
avidone1 Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 If you know your going to buy a bps rod, I would think the guy who works that dept. should be helpful. I would also browse the online catalogue and carefully read the descriptions Quote
BaitMonkey1984 Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 Sounds like you got a good set-up. Not much flipping and punching in my neck of the woods, but I would recommend a high speed reel to get that thing back to the boat as fast as possible. I sped up my reel for my jog rod a few years ago and now am getting more casts in a given day. Quote
