Ersteman Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 I took my 20 month old daughter fishing for the first time and she loved it. I went to a small pond. She touched her first bass with both hands. She spent most of the time throwing rocks in the pond, but it was really great having her their with me. When it was time to leave, she threw the biggest fit crying at the top of her lungs. I guess I have a new fishing buddy now. Cheers! 15 Quote
Kbral87 Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 Any time I take my son (almost 3yrs) I usually have to bring him back crying because he does not want to leave the pond. 1 Quote

Super User Nitrofreak Posted April 28, 2016 Super User Posted April 28, 2016 Enjoy it while you can because they grow up and find different interests, like boys... I love taking my girls fishing and they used to love going with me now it's a rarity, make as many memories as you can !!! 1 Quote
adam lancia Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 I'll be getting my almost 3 year old started this summer, any advice on how to start her out? How do you guys handle water safety and ensuring she doesn't try to jump in the pond? Do you try to fish at the same time...? Thanks in advance! 1 Quote
Turkey sandwich Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 I think for young kids, it's important to make it really simple, but also to make sure it holds their attention. For that, it's tough to beat live bait in a pond where you know they can catch their fill of panfish and/or bullheads. Plus, they also make great table faire. It can be a cool feeling for a kid to catch dinner. Quote

Thanks in advance! yep, live bait on an easy to use rod like the zebco dock demon is the way to go in my opinion. if you start fishing, you'll lose their attention. i try to keep focused on them. BUT if they decide they want to throw rocks or play in the dirt or run around in circles, let 'em. making them fish is like my mom making me play soccer or tennis when i was a kid. hated them both and quit as soon as i could!!! nothing like a kid seeing their first fish like the OP said, "touching it". my older nephew squirmed around and jumped back and was soooooooo excited it was too much for me to contain myself. my brother and i were crying we were laughing so hard at his excitement! not to mention his pride! to date, his PB smallmouth is still bigger than mine and he'll remind me from time to time that he catches bigger fish than his "unc"!! Cheers! don't forget to snap you a few pics while they're that young too! one of my favorite pics of myself as a kid is me standing on top of a bucket with a stringer full of fish! i try to snap a few of the nephews while they're still so young so that one day they'll have some good ones to brag about!
