PennBass Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 Why are Roman Made swimbaits so expensive? I get that they're handcrafted and imported from some foreign country and individually tested etc. etc. etc., but what makes them so expensive? After all, it's just a block of wood, some weights, and paint. Do you guys think it's worth it at all? Quote
BassThumb Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 For $4-500, I don't think it could possibly be worth it. I would probably lose it to a northern the first time I fished with it! I was unaware that there were swimbaits in that price range. Thanks for sharing. 2 Quote
papajoe222 Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 My guess is that, like some shotguns, they are meant to be collector pieces. 1 Quote
XzyluM Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 Basically you are paying a master at his craft to carve by hand a piece of art that is not only beautiful, but swims and acts as close to a real fish as possible. It is simply more than just carving a piece of wood. Would I pay that much for a lure? No I wouldn't. But I can understand why people do. It might just be a collectible to some, but there are actually people that fish with them and have caught some very nice fish with them. 5 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 27, 2016 Global Moderator Posted April 27, 2016 You can get RM baits around $100. They're made to be fished and you're paying for someone's time and attention to detail for a finely crafted bait. Most small batch baits are expensive because of the time that goes into them, like custom carved and painted wood cranks. RM are far from the most expensive too. Don't lose them and they're way more cost effective than a Senko that you know 100% without a doubt you're going to lose. 1 Quote
S. Sass Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 I asked the same thing a while back. In general why would anyone pay even the $50 prices for these mass produced baits. If I remember correctly some fairy that was kin to Santa Clause and partied with God himself makes it so. Teasing of course before I get slaughtered for saying such a horrible thing. Its only worth it if they sell you a sales pitch and make you believe it enough to con your $ from you. An example would be that video/commercial of that guy "supposedly" making these in his basement with elevator music playing. Or that pro that is telling you this is the greatest bait ever as he collects sponsor $$$. That is a con job for YOUR $$$. Then all it takes is one or two to believe it and the battle is all but over once you get a few believing the hype. Your Ferrari actually could be justified with the exotic materials and research to make the millions of components work along with the computer system. Your still buying a block of wood some hooks and supposedly a hand carving. This is a hand carving to me. that Roman Made is in a wood shop using power tools eloquently blocked out with music. Let this guy carve you a swim bait. Oh and you have to love this line on this webpage if this is indeed them http://dyavm.ftvcs.servertrust.com/default.asp Quote we are working with Japan to try to get Manufacturing Streamlined. These are all hand made Lets streamline manufacturing well I thought it was one guy hand making these things. What are we doing cloning him now? Its pretty generally known manufacturing is make (something) on a large scale using machinery. According to Google. 1 Quote
blckshirt98 Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 The Roman Made Mother takes about 12 hours to make, so even if you're paying say $25/hr for skilled labor, not including materials and markup, $400 is reasonable. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted April 27, 2016 Super User Posted April 27, 2016 You think Roman labor comes cheap these days? 1 Quote

frogflogger Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 It's fishing - if a $400 swimbait would give you a better chance at a dd northern strain - many would be forking out the dough - and they do. Quote
fisherrw Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 id never buy one of those when theres 50 to 100 dollar swimbaits that are probably almost as good... Quote
