bt8897 Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I started a post recently about Dobyns savvy vs fury. I have some "points" availlble to me through a program at work.. Now im wondering if i should use the $200 worth of credit for a Dobyns champion or g loomis nrx or glx. I would never spend $500 on a rod, but with the points I can basically get $200 off. Are the Loomis rods that big of a jump from the Dobyns? Quote
Robert Riley Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 I'm a dobyns fan boy, and I have a DX745, it's pretty great. But I've heard the NRX is the best rod out there. Quote
Dye99 Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 I own 3 different Dobyns, and a few Loomis rods. One of which is the NRX. Fact is, they are all awesome. What are you using it for? Quote
bt8897 Posted April 27, 2016 Author Posted April 27, 2016 Bottom contact baits, 1/4 - 5/8 ounce Quote
Super User South FLA Posted April 27, 2016 Super User Posted April 27, 2016 I have the many Dobyns Champions, and Extremes and they are good rods, but I am really disappointed with guide rings popping out, which I believe they have since changed guides, on the Extremes at least. I also have many custom Loomis blanks from years ago, GLXs, GL2, IMXs, etc. and have yet to pop guide rings off....and yes I have broken a few blanks for both rods. So from experience I would go G. Loomis NRX or GLX over the Dobyns Extreme in general. 1 Quote
bt8897 Posted April 27, 2016 Author Posted April 27, 2016 Thanks for the replies, I think Im going for the NRX Quote

We have never had any guide rings pop out, and to be perfectly honest, I'm kinda clumsy with them at times, banging them off the boat and stuffing layers of them into a single rod locker (with sleeves on, of course). Capt.Bob Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 If I'm Spending that much I will be going with a St Croix Legend Elite.... but if you are fixed on one of these 3,,, I'd say the NRX hands down. 1 Quote

Bassthumb, its has not been my experience for the Kigan guides speced on the Dobyn's rods. However, I don't sleeve any of my rods, I did for a bit, but it was more of a pain with trebles more often than not. Nevertheless, in my boat's rod locker I have other rod brands (St. Croix, Daiwa, Shimano, Loomis, Star, All Star, etc.) that haven't had issues with popping rings off guides. To Dobyn's credit they have always sent replacement guides at no charge, but I choose to forgo the guides and replaced with Fuji at my local rod shop. However, from the pic below, I can say that I do like the blank and balance of the Dobyn's Champion and Extreme series and still own them, regardless of guide issues ! I would also not be hesitant to buy the new Extreme HP Series HP with Fuji speced guides. However, I would still pick a NRX and GLX over the Extreme and Champion based on my experience to date over the Dobyn's as bt8897 did after forum input. Not bashing just telling what my experience has been and hopefully helping other members out in their decisions. 1 Quote
Super User senile1 Posted April 27, 2016 Super User Posted April 27, 2016 I have experience with Dobyns Champion Extremes, G.Loomis GLX, and NRX rods. I would rate them in this order: NRX, GLX, and then the Extreme. Keep in mind that I use these rods for jigs and soft plastics where perceived sensitivity is a key factor in making my choice. Someone else might have a different viewpoint based on the use of the rod. With a $200 discount I think you have the right idea to go for a high end rod. 1 Quote
bt8897 Posted April 28, 2016 Author Posted April 28, 2016 Thanks for all the input, Im going to go with the NRX. I would never spend this kind of money on a rod if I didnt have a discount so I might as well take the plunge. Quote
onetime Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 I have all the rods you mentioned, for bottom contact and the weight you're going to use, get the NRX 894c jwr, you're welcome. Quote
