For DEEP cranking, I like a long rod, MH power, and moderate taper for making bomb casts, and keeping all of the rod loaded while fighting a hooked fish.  Fats rods are what a minority prefer, but I like a slower blank.  I use a Pinnacle DH5 7-11 cranking rod for this.  A 5:1 reel and 12# fluoro round out the combo.

I use the pinnacle perfecta DHC5 7ft 8in MH moderate fast, and lews BB1  5-1 ratio works very well..excellent combo for me

BPS came out with a new line of cranking rods last year, they offer a 7'10" mag heavy rated 1-4 ounces. I use this rod for the 10xd, and it handles them just fine and they are $99

What kind of reel would you recommend using with a rod like that for cranking?

I'm going on a walleye fishing trip in a month and we will mostly be trolling, pulling cranks and pretty deep in some parts.

Something with a 5-1,or 5-4 ratio would do well, and some use a 6-1,or 6-4.I like the lews BBI personally, but shimano and daiwa in fact all the reel makers make a cranking (ie)low ratioreel for that purpose.Just fid one you like in your budget range.take care

Want to cast a country mile, have a moderate action for the trebles and be able to use up to 2 oz monster cranks, then look no further than the St Croix Legend Extreme LXC711HMF LOVE THAT ROD, thanks Dwight! I also have a crucial crankbait series which I like and would choose that as a bang for buck rod, I think they make a hvy action also for heavier baits.

If you like Gary Dobyn's work, perhaps take a look at the Fury Line.

The 7'6" Med Hvy or the 7'9" Med Hvy Swimbait could be in your wheel house.

Does the 7'6" mh have the same mod-fast taper as the 795 swimbait rod?

Perhaps contact Gary directly.

He knows his stuff and can put you on exactly what you're looking for.

My conversation with him was 6xd and lighter use the 764, anything heavier use the 805 CB.

This is a 3 year old thread. Don't think a lot has changed since then however.

The 10XD is a giant crankbait and a MH swimbait rod rated 1-5 oz works good, little over kill. I have used my IRG754F Magic Stick for big 1 1/2 oz  deep divers, not ideal but works good.

I throw my large & heavy crankbaits on my Daiwa DX 8' Swimbait rod Med- Heavy that's rated for 1-6 oz. It'll launch the heavy cranks and squarebills along way.

I resurrected this thread only ask about the taper on the 765. I don’t throw deep cranks but would use this rod to throw smaller hard swimbaits in the .5 to 1.5oz range, If it has the same taper as the 795 this is likely the rod I’m looking for, if it’s more of a true fast action then it’s not. I’m not going to waste Gary’s time, I’m just putting together a budget and shopping list for next spring.
