I am looking at picking up a Okuma Komodo Low Profile baitcasting reel. It is the KDR-273V. Someone on craigslist has one locally that I can pick up for $80 and its in "like new" condition with the box and papers and all. It will be used for fishing from the banks and not sure what rod I'm going to pick up for it yet. Is this a good deal for one of these and is anyone currently using one that can give me some feedback? I've never used an Okuma reel before. Thanks in advance!

I hade a Komodo for a few years but sold it. The retrieve was outstanding and the looks with the CF handle and red accents and Abec 5 bearings were nice standard features. I didn't care for the breaking system nor the way you access the breaking system so I sold it. For $80 it may be worth a go but I can honestly say I don't envision owning one until they change the breaking system and access to it.

Yo can get a better reel with 80: Daiwa Aird.

You have one of these and like it? I have seen them go on ebay for like $50 or around there.

Okuma baitcast reels seldom get mentioned.  Reviews of the Komodo and Aird are rare.  I have no experience with either.  The Okuma should be a more robust reel.  It has an aluminum frame and side plates (although one review only mentioned the handle side plate being aluminum).  It appears the Daiwa is a composite.  Not that long ago people wouldn't recommend such a reel except for the fisherman who only occasionally fished.

I think the 273 means it has a 7.3:1 ratio?  Personally I feel the $80 is a great price and it would be my first choice.  My only Okuma model is the Helios Air.  Was impressed from the first cast with it.  Went and bought a second.

A little over half my reels are Daiwas, so I am not a Diawa hater.  Just feel that in this case the Okuma should be the better reel.  Once brakes are set to my liking, I hardly ever touch them, so that wouldn't affect my buying decision.

Great help, thank you!
