Oklahoma Mike Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 I cut the thumb and index finger off of some level 3 cut resistant gloves and wear them all the time I'm fishing. Not only sun protection but I no longer get pokes and cuts from hooks.
Kevin22 Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 I bought a pair of these to try this summer. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Glacier-Gloves-Abaco-Fingerless-UPF-50-Grey-Sun-Gloves-Large-X-Large-/301934856702?hash=item464cb849fe:g:0ZcAAOSwpDdVRam3
BassThumb Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 If these gloves are comfortable to you, that's awesome. I should try some! If you like following the new trend, go for it! But if this is a method of self-preservation, know that skin cancer of the hands is extremely rare. The major risk factor of disease include tobacco use, excessive alcohol use, physical inactivity, overweight/obesity, high blood cholesterol, unhealthy diet, high blood glucose, and stress. All of these are FAR more likely to kill you than some sun on your hands, so if you're truly interested in a full lifespan, check all these factors off your list before concerning yourself with skin protection of the hands. It needed to be said. These gloves aren't saving anyone's lives 1

How was that difficult to understand? Telling somebody to not prevent themselves from getting skin cancer (rare or not, it's still very possible) is irresponsible and a hundred different ways of ignorant. You should be ashamed of yourself. You help nobody and sound like a complete fool. 3

You can get skin cancer on the bottom of your feet, between your toes & between the checks of your butt not from direct sun exposure to these areas but general exposure. That is the reason to cover your hands from exposure just like you cover your head, face, arms & legs. 5
basswrangler83 Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 I just bought a pair of glacier gloves and used them for the first time yesterday. I was very pleased. I have burnt my hands on several occasions like you have. I also wear a simms fishing shirt and a buff, started wearing it last year. I'd like to wear a minimal amount of sun block, plus the less sun on your skin, the cooler you stay. It's like fishing in the shade. 2
Kevin22 Posted April 23, 2016 Posted April 23, 2016 Burnt the top of my hands today because I didn't have gloves. Only part of my body that was exposed and they were cherry red. Not really worried about skin cancer on my hands, just hate burnt hands!
Super User iabass8 Posted April 24, 2016 Author Super User Posted April 24, 2016 Went with the under armor iso chill gloves. Cabelas has them on sale for 23$ vs 40$ retail. First choice was Simms but i would have to order them direct.
Super User Further North Posted April 24, 2016 Super User Posted April 24, 2016 Another vote for Simms gloves. I bought my first pair at Sierra Trading post.com...a lot of their on-line prices are crazy cheap if you wait until they go on sale from their normally low prices. I think I paid $10 - $15. There's another benefit to sun gloves and buffs that goes past preventing sunburn and cancer prevention that someone already mentioned: when it's hot out, get them wet and they'll help keep you cool.
tander Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 Have some skin cancer cut off you change you mind real quick about covering up exposed skin. 1
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 26, 2016 Global Moderator Posted April 26, 2016 I must know some unlucky people. I can think of a half dozen guys that aren't even that old that have had chunks cut out their arms and hands to remove skin cancer from a lifetime of fishing and getting burnt. My hands and forearms are red right now from fishing today, while it was cloudy out. I lost my sungloves and need to replace them so I'll be looking into some of these suggestions.
nascar2428 Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 I find that a tube of sun block helps to prevent sunburn during cloudy and blue bird conditions. Fish don't mind it either.
RichF Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 Not sure if this is 100% true but I've heard (from an elite series pro) that putting your "sunblocked" hands in a livewell full of bass can kill them. I've never done it but I think it could be possible. I know not everything said by an elite pro is true but I figure they've handled enough fish in livewells during tournaments that this could be a viable observation.
BassThumb Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 I'm getting flamed a lot here, but I'm sticking by what I said 100%.

And you wonder why after stating something so ignorant you don't even bother to read the posts in here that give first/second hand examples. Telling people they should worry about before you worry about tobacco use, excessive alcohol use, physical inactivity, overweight/obesity, high blood cholesterol, unhealthy diet, high blood glucose, and stress while out on the water before even thinking about the suns UV rays that are beating down on you for hours upon hours while out on the water is so mind numbingly moronic I don't understand how such an asinine thought came out of a competent humans brain. Perhaps you should put your foot in your mouth and educate yourself more on the subject matter before trying to comment on something. You are literally helping nobody and come off as a foolish troll. Well...if you watch an episode and notice somebody wearing gloves while fishing in the sun, they are usually wearing sun gloves. Shaw Grigsby and Aaron Marten wear these a lot. 2

I've had skin cancer on my hands 3 times. To say it is rare is flat out wrong. To say that the major risk factors are what you posted.....for skin cancer........ is bordering on a personal bias against people who don't fit your "preferred" image. 1
