dam0007 Posted April 17, 2016 Posted April 17, 2016 Hey guys, What's the difference between the 2 other than colors. I was reading the actual brakes kick out differently or something?? Idk any one of you own the new one yet? Quote
JeziHogg Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 The spool, one is aluminum and the other is magnesium.... I think. Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted April 19, 2016 Super User Posted April 19, 2016 difference between the two is actually 3... if you subtract 13 from 16 the difference is 3. Really glad i could help! but no seriously that finish on the new one looks space age, i like it! send your old one my way when you buy a '16! 3 Quote

Lmaooooooo hahaha there really doesn't seem to be a difference other than the paint job. Quote
Cgrinder Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 New SVS system, 4 brakes vs. 6 on the old one. Supposed to be a "better" system. 1 Quote
JGBassinAL Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 New one has a shallower spool as well I believe. 1 Quote
offsidewing Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 I have both. The functional differences are: Spool Size - '13 is a 100, '16 is a 70 and is ported. Silent Tune Spool - '13 has traditional spool bearing placement. '16 has the handle side bearing on the spool. Both spool bearings spring loaded. Braking System - '13 has 6 block SVS Infinity. '16 has a completely new SVS system with 4 brake blocks and a larger brass cone. Bearings: '13 has your standard Shimano high end bearing count. '16 adds a bearing under the handle and the ability to add a bearing to the level wind. To me, the biggest difference is in the braking system. The external dial does impact the braking more, meaning you have to open the side plate less to dial in different weights. I'm not interested in throwing baits weighing less than a 1/4 ounce with the Metaniums, so I might not get much benefit from the Silent Tune bearings. Quote
IAY Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Metanium 16 does NOT have a magnesium spool, it has a shallow spool that's suppose to be 10% lighter than Met 13 according to Shimano. Quote

TxHawgs Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 It's not a big change but I do like the aesthetics of the 16's better than the 13's. Ability to add a bearing to the level wind? Can someone explain that? What are the benefits of installing one, and how significant is it since it doesn't come with one? I like the fact he mentioned about the improved SVS and not having to open it and adjust the blocks as much/often. Wonder what the motive of going to a 70 sz spool was? It's obviously the direction they have gone in a cpl new models this yr. Is it because they figure so many guys r fishing braid anymore ya think? When I get some I guess they will be braid reels for me and I will run my heavier fluro and co-poly on the 13's. Quote

Actually your wrong it does, the 13 had a mg spool and the 16 is going to have the mgl spool supposedly "magnesium light" Quote

They just added additional porting and made the spool a bit more shallower than previous iterations. The reel will be hell of a lot more expensive if it had magnesium spool. Quote
Gavin.Ange Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 Excuse me my mistake. They do make reels that are in the $200 dollar price point that are magnesium for example my okuma helios air... I think lews makes one too Quote
IAY Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 That's MG body, a lot of those reels have carbon composite gear and brake side plates. Non of those reels have MG spools Quote
