KyBassin16 Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 I'm in the market for a new Jig/spinnerbaits rod and reel so I'm wondering should I get a more expensive rod or a more expensive reel. I narrowed it down between two rod and reels, a Dobyns Fury or Savvy, Or a G.Loomis e6x with a Lews LFS. I don't know which one to get what would you guys prefer Thanks for Your Help Quote
trick worms Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 I'd spend more money on the rod. get the LFS, and spend the rest on a rod. I have heard there are better rods for the money than the e6x though. Quote

Super User new2BC4bass Posted April 13, 2016 Super User Posted April 13, 2016 You can buy a Fenwick Aetos for the price of the Loomis...or a bit less. I think you would be happy with an Aetos. As a bonus they are very nice looking as well....especially in the sunlight. A Powell Max 3D is also less and from what I've read, very nice rods. I like the couple HMG b/c rods I have, but neither are bottom contact rods. If the Fenwick Elite Tech Bass is as good as the Smallmouth series, then I'd add them to your short list. The Lew's Tournament MB can be found for about $110 on fleabay. Dual braking system. Some claim such systems fail at being good with either. I really like the dual brake reels I have. Of course that isn't saying much since I really like reels with only centrifugal or magnetic brakes, too. My Patriarch XT has one centrifugal brake on and 3 on the magnetic dial which is the least amount of brakes I can use on any reel other than a MagForce 3D reel. 1 Quote
Super User Further North Posted April 14, 2016 Super User Posted April 14, 2016 Rather than predetermining how much I'm going to spend on each component...I do a bunch of research, try some set ups and buy a rig I like. More dollars doesn't always equal the best for what I want... Quote
sarcazmo Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 By far rod. Rod will have a MUCH larger impact especially if you use it for jigs. If my budget was $350 for both honestly I'd spend ~300 on a rod and 50 on a reel. Quote

PennBass Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 I love the Daiwa Tatula 6'10" MH F for jigs. Uncoated blank means it's not tip heavy at all, and it weighs in at below 4 oz. Sensitivity is also great and I think that for the price it's hard to beat. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted April 14, 2016 Super User Posted April 14, 2016 I would buy one, then save up, and buy the other. Quote

I'd rather feel the subtle bite and fight the bass than miss it altogether with an inferior rod. Especially if I'm using it for bottom contact presentations. We go after little green fish that more often than not don't tax our reels much at all. If it was between NRX/k2/SCV/Eternity2/NFC blanks w/ Mettle reels or a 60 dollar rod with all Metanium/Steez reels... High end blanks all day. Quote

You are correct until you get to double diget bass in cover, then she will smoke your H2O reel! I also agree with having a quaility rod, my recommendation is by a quaility reel first which will last a lifetime. A quaility rod can break on day one! Low end H2O ain't exactly quaility, I worked for Academy & their return bend was full of em. 1 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 15, 2016 Super User Posted April 15, 2016 Rods may be more important for "catching", but great reels make the "fishing" more enjoyable. 2 Quote

I've pulled some BIG bass (no scale so who knows how big) out of some nasty stuff in Obregon with inexpensive reels. Guess we'll just agree to disagree :-) Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted April 15, 2016 Super User Posted April 15, 2016 A classic case of "go figger". For me, the reel is part of the "feel" process and, IMO, medium priced and higher end reels "feel" better than lower end reels. Rods are part of the sensitivity issue as well. We can probably agree that some rods feel different than others. There you have it, pick your poison. Me, I know that I've been burned enough on low end reels that I ain't doing that again. Quote
Super User burrows Posted April 15, 2016 Super User Posted April 15, 2016 I say spend more on the reel get a good rod later Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted April 15, 2016 Super User Posted April 15, 2016 Some will favor the money in the reel and some in the rod. I like them to be somewhat equal with not much of a gap in price. I wouldn't put a $50 reel on a $300 rod nor would I want it the other way around. That would be like having a brand new 60k boat and pulling it with a $2000 truck from the early 90s. Sure the boat will be pretty awesome to use when it is in the water, but there is a chance the truck could break down trying to get it there. My general theory is for feel apps spend a bit more on the rod. For moving/reaction baits put a bit more in the reel. Quote
