I was making a leader with 12lbs seagar invisX fluro to a 15lbs power pro braid on my spinning real.. Decided to add a lot of fluro so i can basically be fishing directly with the fluro and not having any braid reach water on my casts... Once i was done loading it up it all the fluro unraveled. I kept a 7 foot leader and took off all the unraveled line.. Is there a way to load more line on so it stays or is this impossible with fluro on a spinning rod.. ?

I know the pros strictly use fluro on their drop shot set ups etc.. so how does the line stay on??

How much line is on your spool? I like to leave about 1/8 to 1/16 of an inch from the spool lip.

yup, around that much, it wasnt over filled or under.. it unravels because the line seems super stiff or something.. i dunno

Either you spooled it up with the spool in a wrong position (it should be laying flat on the ground, unwinding in the direction your reel winds line on) or you got an old spool. I have 10 lbs. InvisX on my spinning setup and it handles beautifully. I've also found that line conditioner, specifically KVD's Line and Lure, works wonders on mono/fluoro.

My first thought is that 12lb fluorocarbon is probably too heavy for your spinning reel. Go with a lighter line, and see what happens. I'm also curious as to why you would use a leader so long that it is the only thing touching the water. At this point, the fluorocarbon is your main line, and the braid is nothing more than backing. If you only want fluorocarbon in the water, go with a lighter line (try 8lb), and treat it with line conditioner. If you want to stick with 12lb, you may need a bigger reel.

#1 find scissors or razor sharp teeth

#2 cut line

#3 retie line with smaller diameter or better quality line (sunline)

#4 cut your leader so that it stops just before getting to the reel

#5 oh yeah stop using 15lb braid as well and switch to 10

What's the point of having braid on the spool at all if you're not going to get any of the benefits of it other than your spool holds more line?

15lb braid is just fine on a spinning reel, I have 20 on a few and have zero issues (it's 8lb diameter afterall).

The problem you're having is 12lb fluoro, from any company, is going to be too much for a bass sized spinning reel to handle.

Knock that leader down to 5 or 6 feet and I bet your problems go away. I'd still suggest going to a little lighter leader though so you don't have a big knot clunking through your guides every cast.

As for the pros using only fluoro, you might want to check again. They can say they use straight fluoro all they want, but all you have to do is listen to them fighting a fish on spinning gear, that whine don't lie. I have braid on all but 1 of my spinning rods, and I couldn't be happier.

That is what FC wants to do on a spinning reel.  You can control it by feathering it with your finger.  Closing the bail will not stop it.  It will continue to fly off with the bail closed,  as you already know.  Braid with a leader is the way to go.  That will not eliminate all problems.  If you are not diligent to watch the line on your spool, a loop can result in casting an ugly snarl.

Floro is inherently stiff, some brands a lot more than others. Use floro or a hybrid for leader material and light braid. I have no problems with that setup but straight floro will make you say bad words (unless it's light stuff). BTW - If you spool enough floro to never have your braid in the water, there is no advantage to the braid.

I'm one of the guys who said "#$%% that!" I'm going to braid!  I went to braid with a few feet of fluro and I've never regretted it. I actually use spinning gear now lol. No more looking for soft fluro but seagar invisX as you listed was one of the softest and easiest to handle I've found.

I have tried the same idea, ~20-40' of floro on top of a reel spooled with braid.  I did it on an UL rig I use for panfishing.  My though was to be able to fish small jigs in super clear water all day without having to retie my leader or respool my reel.  This rig does double duty as a white perch rig so I like to keep braid on it for that.

It has never worked very well at all, either the floro uncoils and knots or the line gets snagged on the connection knot on the cast.  I was also using very cheap floro so that might have been part of my issue.  I have some line conditioner now and some YZ hybrid on the way to me, so I might give it one more shot before I just pony up and buy a second spool for my reel.

you've just got too much fluoro on the reel for that heavy lb test.  either much less line if you want to keep the 12lb or lighter line (like 6 or 8) if you're set on keeping that much fluoro on the reel.

I fish 8-10lb braid with 6-10lb fluro leaders, usually I use an 8' plus long leader so that I can re tie a few times without having too short of a leader. If a fish wraps me up in a dock or something and there are some nicks 3' up the line, instead of re tying my whole leader I can just cut above the abraded part and tie my bait back on.

If I used straight fluoro on a spinning reel I would go broke. That stuff is finicky.

Like others said, that is due to line memory, which is more prevalent in thicker, heavier lines - mono, and FC even more so. You can try to make 12lb work, but I would highly recommend 8lb test. It is strong enough to be out of the lite line category for me (4lb-6lb) but also very manageable on spinning reels if you are spooling completely with FC. 10lb is certainly doable, but once you jump over 8lb, you start losing a bit of that manageability.

If you want/need heavier line go with braid mainline, then attach however heavy FC you want because when there is only 2 to 5 feet of it, there isn't enough to cause memory/coiling problems most of the time, even if you use heavier FC. I use 30lb hi-vis braid on my spinning reels, then attach a short leader of 12lb or even 20lb when the lake erie rocks are giving me problems.

Your current method doesn't particularly take advantage of either of the lines' strengths as much as spooling straight, or using main braid with a short FC leader does.

I use 3-4' fluoro leader with braid and have not had good luck with all Fluro on a spinning reel. If I want something other than braid I use all Silver Thread AN40 copolymer.

12lb fluoro is WAY too thick for a spinning reel, it'll shoot off like a spring.  7-8lb fluoro at most is where you wanna cap the lb test on a spinning reel.

Thanks guys. Gonna go back to keeping a 6' leader from now on. Once I buy some lighter fluro I'll try that out.

I also had this sort of issue with straight FC on a spinning reel.  I went down to 6lb and still had some "jumpage". I thought it might be due to using it the same day as spooling it on and it wasnt used to the smaller spool than it came from.

i then came across a video (I think from someone here on BR) where you soak the spool in warm water for 5-8 minutes and it molds the line to its new home on the reel.  I have to say, this worked great!! However 12lb still might be a bit heavy, but I've never tried so I can't say that it won't work! :)

12lbs fluorocarbon is just way to much for a spinning reel.  I would drop down to 6lbs or 8lbs line.
