FishNerd Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 I'm looking for a 7' medium power moderate action spinning rod. I could maybe settle for a 6'6" I suppose, but really want a 7', and strongly prefer a 1 piece. For various reasons, I'm looking for something ~$50 or less. I cannot seem to find what I'm looking for after browsing tons of rods and all of the "obvious usuals" on various popular websites. Can anyone suggest something for me? Obviously, I need a make/model that's currently still in production. Thanks y'all Quote
Oklahoma Mike Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Berkeley lighting rod shock. Within your price range, and tough to beat at that price. I would also take a look at the He11bent rod from #8 tackle - I think DSG recently had them on sale for $50. 2 Quote
georgeyew Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Check Dicks. They have the Shimano Sojourn for about $30. Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Another vote for the Berkley lightning rod shock series, and check FFO out for them. At FFO they only cost twenty dollars. Great rod for the money, and nearly bullet proof. 2 Quote

You do have to keep an eye on the site as items change. 2 Quote
fvogel67 Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Cabelas has the Fenwick Silverhawk for 59.99 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted April 13, 2016 Super User Posted April 13, 2016 Cabela's has the Fenwick Silverhawk on sale for $60, it is $10 more than you wanted to spend but it is a lot better than any other rod in that price range. That rod has Fuji Alconite guides, a good blank and a Fuji reel seat, you aren't going to get that kind of quality on any other rod in the price range. The other thing is they have a 7' medium power, moderate fast action in a spinning rod but if not that you only other option with that action in a 1 piece is a Lightning rod shock. 2 Quote
FishNerd Posted April 14, 2016 Author Posted April 14, 2016 Yeah, see, that's the problem I'm having... While I'm extremely grateful for all of your responses, none of the recommendations you guys had actually fit the description of what I'm looking for! I realize I may have to settle for something a little less than ideal - but what gives?! Why in the world is it so hard to find a bass spinning rod with these specs...?? Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted April 14, 2016 Super User Posted April 14, 2016 Berkley Lightning Shock. My understanding is the Shock's have a moderate action because they are made for braid. Berkley Amp Saltwater has a 7' Moderate for less than $30. Other possibilities, but may have to be on sale to get below $50. Shakespeare Ugly Stik, Cabela's Tourney Trail, H2O Express Ethos. You are severely limiting yourself with the $50 limit. See if there are any fiberglass spinning rods still being made today. Automatic Moderate action. Quote

I just bought a 2 pc medium fast for traveling in the trunk rod. It feels pretty good, I haven't fished it yet but it felt good in my hands, paired it with a Curado 70 XG it was impressive. Quote

I have a 6' medium Pflueger Trion GX-7, 1-piece combo I got at Cabelas a few years ago for about $50. I think is supposed to be moderate-fast action, but feels moderate (or close enough that it doesn't make a difference). I believe there was a 7' version. Not sure if the combo is still available. 1 hour ago, new2BC4bass said: Berkley Lightning Shock. My understanding is the Shock's have a moderate action because they are made for braid. If I'm not mistaken, the Ugly Stik GX2 is a fiberglass rod. I would take my Trion combo over one of those any day. 40 minutes ago, lmbfisherman said: I just bought a 2 pc medium fast for traveling in the trunk rod. Heh, I bought a 7' MF 2-piece spinning silverhawk last week for that $60 sale to serve as my new "trunk rod". Very crisp and well put-together. I'm looking forward to seeing if it can help me tempt any "lunch hour" smallies over the next few weeks. Quote
blckshirt98 Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 "Moderate" isn't a really popular action, F/XF is probably 99% of the bass rods out there so you're going to have to do some legwork to find the right rod for you with a Med/Mod rating. You might want to find a Big 5 or Wal Mart nearby that might carry some of the lower priced fiberglass rods and see if you find one with the action you're looking for! Quote
