Brett's_daddy Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 Hi there, Okay, if you're just fishing your local ponds/lakes...nothing too big (maybe 75-100 acres) would a v-hull work for bass or will they not be able to get close enough to where the bass are to be an effective boat? I know I've asked a bazillion questions lately on my search for a boat but I just want to make sure that i get something I'll be happy with and will be able to do what I want it to do which is mainly bass fishing. As always, thanks for any input!!! Quote
Nick B Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 The v-hull vs mod v hull question comes down to how much draft you will have. If you are worried about getting really shallow and are only fishing a pond, a jon boat would fit the bill. The V hull will cut through waves better but has a deeper draft, the mod V does a better job than a flat bottom cutting through waves and has a shallower draft than the V hull, but not as shallow as a flat bottom. Personally I fish out of a Deep V, I fish a lot of lakes that are effected by the wind that the waves rolling really quick, but I also have a higher deck and am effected by the wind more than mod V. I can get fairly shallow, I think my draft is like 10 in. For you it will come down to personal preference 1 Quote
Brett's_daddy Posted April 12, 2016 Author Posted April 12, 2016 The thing is this will be a family boat as my wife and son will be with me too so a jon boat wouldn't be feasible for three people. As long as I can get fairly shallow...enough to get close to the lilly pads near shore I think the v-hull would be a more versatile boat. Quote
Nick B Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 The wife is why I have a V-hull, she feels like she may fall out of the others. You can still get shallow in V-hull, the draft between a jon boat and a V-hull is a differences of inches. 1 Quote
Wileyw Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 I believe the stability of the mod-v is a little better when you're standing all day casting for bass. Usually the V-hull has a higher gunnel around the boat and I think most kids parents would prefer that. Quote
Brett's_daddy Posted April 12, 2016 Author Posted April 12, 2016 Yeah, I have a very active 5 year old son who is ALL BOY...lol. I intend for him to fish while out there which is why I don't want something with a high casting deck that he could easily topple over. Quote
wpwarhawk Posted April 16, 2016 Posted April 16, 2016 With a mod v you are "ON" the boat, at least the front and rear decks. With a deep V you are "IN" the boat, much better for a family boat IMHO. Quote
