lbriggs Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 I need a new MH rod. I will be using 3/8 oz jigs and texas rigs, as well as a frog/buzzbait occasionally. I found a 7'0" Veritas Micro Guide, medium power fast action for $72: I heard to use the medium as these rods run heavy. Lure rating is 1/4 to 3/4 ounce. Can I do better than this, at this price range? P.S.: I have a Veritas spinning rod I love. Quote
Kevin22 Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 That rod would be great for 3/8 jigs and t-rigs (not in heavy cover), as well as buzzbaits... But its a bit light for frogs in cover. You could make due with frogs but it wouldn't be ideal. However the MH which is more ideal for frogs, will be too stiff for buzzbaits and lighter t-rigs unless fishing in cover. You will have to choose which is primary and which is a secondary use and go from there. FWIW I use a 7'MHF for pitching 3/8 jigs and with a trailer the 3/8 barely flexes the rod tip when fishing. Not sure how stiff of a rod you want, but this should give you a baseline. Quote
DesertBass Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 I would seriously consider this if you can swing it http://www.amazon.com/gp/product//B010DENNZ6/ref=twister_dp_update?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Much better rod than the veritas! If you don't like that there are plenty of other options in your price range that blow the veritas out the water! Don't get me wrong the veritas is an alright rod but they aren't very true to rating and tip heavy. Quote
Basswhippa Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 My son has the rod you are considering. It is one sweet rod, and we have probably at least 40 rods of all types and makes. He uses his for traps in grass. Considering what you are throwing, I'm not so sure that I wouldn't move to MH. That said, we fish the likes of KY Lake and Guntersville, etc, so we may be fishing rougher cover and likely are around bigger fish. Quote

I think the M could handle it all..pushing it on the froggin though. Quote
Megastink Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 I'd spend that money in good line. Hi/Seas? Check around at all your local Dick's Sporting Goods. They are the kings of mismarking prices. I one time found a 7' MH Veritas for $30, and a 7' M for only $17! If you don't need the Rod now, that's what I would do. PS: I took both those rods to my local bass club and sold them for $60 each! America! Quote

I have a Veritas already on my spinning setup, and like it very much. It's quite sensitive and the guides are nice, also very light. Quote

The one I linked,Fenwick hmx or hmg, dobyns fury, powell inferno,no.8 tackle blackout, daiwa procyon, etc! What other rods are you making basing your opinion of the veritas off of? I had a 7'3mh veritas and it was an alright rod but like I said there are much better options! Another one to seriously consider would be the duckett ghost if you like white! Quote

I have fished with and know of some great >$100 rods. Like you said the Dobyns Fury and Fenwick HMG are good rods at this price point. So is the Shimano Sellus, Academy Ethos, Abu Vendetta, Duckett Ghost, and plenty other rods. The Veritas remains a strong, light rod that in my experience doesn't break and is decently sensitive in a spinning setup. Just seeing what people thought of a MH Veritas for jigs and t rigs. I think it might be too stout, they run a little heavy. I might just pick up a No8 Blackout. Quote

I liked my original except for the small diameter handle. Looks like the 2 took care of that problem. Exceptional rod at that price. FFO has a 6'9" MHF Elite Tech Smallmouth ($74.88) and a 7'3" MHF HMG ($58.88). Fenwick's fish true to their rating....best I can tell. The Smallmouth sold for $130, but was probably worth closer to $200. All that being said it is more important that you like the rod and have confidence in it. What we think doesn't really matter. My Abu rod experience is limited to a couple Villains. I like the spinning rod, detest the casting rod. Both fish heavier than their rating. Glad I got the ML spinning rod instead of a heavier one.
