NJbassing Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 Looking to get flipping and pitching combo, not looking for the top top of the line but not bottom of the barrel either. Obviously a high speed reel and heavy rod, I'm not brand specific either. Looking for something in the middle anywhere from between $100-$200. Any recomendations would be great. Quote
Super User webertime Posted April 10, 2016 Super User Posted April 10, 2016 If you are a righty, you can score a Daiwa Exceler for $60 then look for a Daiwa Tatula 7'6" H around $100. 1 Quote

S. Sass Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 Lew's speed spool $100 reel new. Or pick one up in the Flea Market here. The Mojo Bass had some flipping rods in there clearance store for like $90 free shipping. clearance store The Flea Market here is going to get you a better bang for your $ either way. Quote

I went with the exceler and Abu Garcia Veritas 2.0 7'6" MH as I don't have an abundance of thick salad in Northern Michigan. Got them at Gander Mountain for a total of $110 when they were doing their first cast promotion. Haven't gotten to use it seriously yet this season but it feels great so far. I'm not sure what my point is, other than I like what I bought... 2 Quote
Kevin22 Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 The 7'6 MH F veritas would be comparable to a Heavy XF in almost every other brand. They make great heavy cover rods though! But you won't have any tip action unless you stick a 1/2-3/4 weight on it. I use a MH veritas as my flippin jig rod, and it works well for that, but it doesn't have hardly ANY tip bend with a 3/8 jig and trailer, I wouldn't want to use it for plastics! Its listed as a Fast action but only has about 10-15% tip flex which puts it closer or at XF. The 7'6 MH veritas would make for a mean punching rod for 1-1.25oz weights in moderate punching cover. Its also widely used as a frog rod due to the stiffness and fast taper to backbone. My point is, don't buy that rod for all-around flipping and pitching unless you only plan to pitch heavy cover for reaction bites. What I would suggest for you would be to look very hard at the tatula XT line. I don't have any personally but I have friends that fish them and rave about them. I am picking my first one up this week. They retail for $99.99 at tackle warehouse. Pair that with a lews speed spool, also for $99.99, and you have a great combo. Both pieces have great warranty and great resale value if you end up changing your mind down the road. However, if you do decide to go a little cheaper, I use a lews laser mg 7:1 for flipping jigs and have had no issues. Some say the graphite parts will wear out, this is season 3 using that reel for flippin/pitchin and I havent had an issue yet. It is $79.99 Quote
Wingman87 Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 Right now I'm flipping with a 7'3" heavy fast TFO tactical and a lews tourney pro g in the 8.3:1 ratio. Ive found that this is a very lightweight and sensitive combo, I feel like I could flip all day with it. Quote
mcipinkie Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 I like what you said "I like what I bought". That's what matters. Whether or not anyone else likes your choice is immaterial. The Veritas's are a little more powerful than rated, but that's a fantastic flipping stick at a very good price. I went with another brand due to some financial help I got, but I never had any problems with the Veritas big sticks. I pitched and flipped every thing from 1/4 oz to 1 1/4 oz with no problem. 1 Quote
