NateFollmer Posted January 3, 2011 Author Posted January 3, 2011 Nate, sorry it is not going as well as you hoped. The speed to produce a shaped lure body was always going to be an issue, plus wood is not the most forgiving material to machine. I see the CNC as a tool for making accurate, symmetrically balanced masters for use in a molding process. Have you thought about casting a block of polyester resin and machining that, for use as a casting master. It should machine well without wearing out the bits. No grain and cheap. I like working with resin, it is a joy to drill and sand, it will polish up to a glass finish if you wanted. My method would be to rough machine, two minutes with a flap wheel to dull the edges, then epoxy to get a smooth finish for molding. Dave I'm going to CNC some Corian for molds, then pour the resin in those. Don't know which resin to try yet... Each has their strengths and weaknesses. I'd like to try one that will float without any additives, but other than that, I'm open to anything! I'm going to use all this PVC I have to hand make some swimbaits I'll get some pics up once I get one started. I may keep messing with the replicator, I just don't have the money right now to buy a router (I think that will work a lot better than this dremel!). Quote
Captain Torpedo Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 Hey Nate. Just finished printing a drop shot minnow mold. Took about 1.5 hours to complete. Can't wait to go home and pour some baits. Myself and another teacher are working on these projects together. We're designing them on Inventor 2010 then exporting the file as an .stl file. Send me a file in that format. I'm looking for a Chigger Chunk design to make next. Quote
NateFollmer Posted January 3, 2011 Author Posted January 3, 2011 Nice! I have a dropshot minnow design too LOL it's a small minnow but has a huge paddle style tail. I'll dig out all my stl files and post them up here so everyone can use them. On my PC at home so it will be tomorrow until I get them up. Quote
NateFollmer Posted January 4, 2011 Author Posted January 4, 2011 http://db.tt/s4LHOtV - crank http://db.tt/y7oEZqc - jerk http://db.tt/iw4EReL - lipless These are OBJ files, but I haven't come across a program that couldn't open an OBJ. Its universal. They have a lot of points, so don't be surprised if they take awhile to open. Let me know if these don't work! Still looking for my old soft plastic files. Quote
BadKarma42 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Update, please. How is your project going? Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted February 23, 2011 Super User Posted February 23, 2011 My guess is that he has no time now that he has a new addtion to the family. Quote
Vodkaman Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Here is my latest CAD model. I am about 40 hours into the design, which was mostly learning new techniques and procedures. Started over a few times, but now I have three design variations that I can call on, a deep body (pic), thin body and folded tail. Dave Quote
NateFollmer Posted March 23, 2011 Author Posted March 23, 2011 Didn't even notice this thread had replies... Sorry guys Vodka - looks awesome, keep it coming! I haven't really had much time to get anything done (Jigfishn called it lol). The router replicator doesn't do a very good job of replicating things that small, so I'm going to have to get some serious CNC time and cut a bunch at once. I still want to complete these, just on hold right now Quote
