Super User .dsaavedra. Posted July 12, 2008 Author Super User Posted July 12, 2008 (I've been wanting to use that smiley for a long time ;D)That looks really good. I like the look of the cut out gills. I might have to try it on my next one. Did you just carve them out with an x-acto? im diggin the smiley! ;D cut out gills are very easy. i didnt use an x-acto because the wood is basswood and that would be d**n hard to carve with an x-acto. what i used was a dremel with this bit: http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=94703-353-194 that bit makes it super easy! i put the first coat of epoxy on the midsection. unfortunatley it didnt go as well as the tail section. i started running out of time and epoxy so i got kinda sloppy inside the joints. i also accidentally touched my knuckle to it once or twice when it was drying but that leveled out. but it is still totally covered, just a few small pits in it which will get filled in with the second coat. Super User .dsaavedra. Posted July 13, 2008 Author Super User Posted July 13, 2008 i epoxied the head. it went well. no problems at all with the head! tomorrow i will put the second coats of epoxy on everything and then after 24hrs it will be ready to fish! Quote
Ifish4keeps Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 good luck with it, tell us if you catch anything on it Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted July 13, 2008 Author Super User Posted July 13, 2008 haha if i catch something (specially a big one) you WON'T STOP hearing about it ;D Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 13, 2008 Super User Posted July 13, 2008 Dave, Great post. Thanks for brininging us along on the ride to the finished product. You did good. You have too much time on your hands. Ever heard the words "summer work"? ;D ;D ;D Quote
MaxDal Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Very good ...... that's not real-TV... that's real tackle making step-by-step ! Very interesting ! Nice color by theway. Let's hope it holds up to your expectations as far as fishability goes. BTW, I still believe weighing the head more plays an important role in the S motion. I know those LC below are not the most durable bait out there, but I believe their S motion is not far from perfect. Notice how the heads are weighed a little more than the rest. Also notice the horizontal position of the front eyelet... interesting. Just my two cents ! Oh and congratulations, you really work fast. I mean the swimbait I showed you at the beginning of this year still hasn't got a paintjob... no time ! Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted July 13, 2008 Author Super User Posted July 13, 2008 sam, i am working!!! working on baits that is. max, there is a lot of weight in the head. two weights plus the weight of the trebel hoks makes the head pretty heavy. also, the chains are very durable. i glued them into the body with D2T, so there is no way they are pulling out. with the first coat of epoxy all cured, i need to clear it up away from the chain because it has stiffened up the chain and limited the movement. here is a picture of the bit with the first coat of epoxy cured: here is some fast work for you: i'm not even done my first swimbait and i'm already a quarter of the way thru my second! Super User .dsaavedra. Posted July 15, 2008 Author Super User Posted July 15, 2008 here are some pics of the finished product (sorry for all the fingerprints on the bait, should have wiped it off first :-/) Quote
NEBassMan Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Sweet!!!! Have you casted and retrieved it yet? how's the action? Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted July 15, 2008 Author Super User Posted July 15, 2008 Sweet!!!! Have you casted and retrieved it yet? how's the action? just in the bath tub. see the video a few pages back. i am going to fish this bad boy tonight and i'll let ya'll know how i do! Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted July 16, 2008 Author Super User Posted July 16, 2008 well it swims much better in a pond. i found the lower the angle of pull is, the better it swims. the tail section really wiggles, the mid section has a light sway side-to-side, and the head remains forward. didnt fish it much, just tested its action. no fish on it. Quote
Ifish4keeps Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 any chance you could get a video of it swimming in the pond, i want to see how it retrieves 8-)the bait looks killer Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted July 17, 2008 Super User Posted July 17, 2008 Hi Dave,I feel your pain concerning those dremel extra tools !! Those made out of tungsten are freaking expensive ! Anyway, I think your ballast weights are still not enough. Plus they look like steel balls ? In case there are steel, you should consider replacing them with lead. I also think you should put more weight in the head-section. I understand you want to make a S-line motion swimbait without a lip. And I think in this type of bait, it's actually the head which impart the S motion. And the head hast to be the heaviest section. I second AvalonJohn on the rust point ! These stuff rust like crazy....... And Stainless Stell ..... Well even my leatherman tool rust so ;D, I thought it was the best stainless steel under the sun. its not the head shape that causes the action, its the fact that the body is interrupted by joints. because there are these interruptions, it creates vorticies in the space where the joint is and it pushes it to one side, and then the flow of the water pushes it back to the other side and starts another vortex which pushes it to the other side and then it continues. at least that is my interpretation of everything i have read about what makes lipless baits swim. Head weigthing is mildly important in a lipless bait. section proportions (length of head) will have the greatest effect on a baits action. looks good dave. the chain is a very out of the box idea. i do not think it will hold up either though. it isnt tensile strength that i would worry about, it is the repeated stress of flexing one way to the other. Ken Huddleston used sevenstrand cable through his very first prototype of what would become the first Castaic Lure Co. Hardbait. Within a day the cable was failing , merely from bending back and forth. im just not sure that the chain has enough inherent give in it to survive. I'm suprised you didnt photo finish it! Very cool man! Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted July 17, 2008 Author Super User Posted July 17, 2008 the bait doesnt wiggle TOO much. really only the tail piece wiggles. so that is the only joint that would be stressed, and the tail is pretty light, so i doubt it will have any negative affects. just my thoughts! im photo finishing my next bait Quote
mackkie Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Dave, to cap off the whole project, I would really like for you to post your first fish caught with it. Excellent job and good luck! Quote

Brent1 Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Just curious, did you ever catch any fish with this? How is it holding up? Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted March 23, 2011 Author Super User Posted March 23, 2011 Just curious, did you ever catch any fish with this? How is it holding up? hanging in my closet because quite frankly, its hideous ;D i think i've improved greatly since i made this first swimbait. i'll be posting my "current" version of a threadfin swimbait tomorrow.
