777 Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 From the research I've done people recommend the berkley lightning or cherrywood rod a lot which is 25 or 30, but when I'm looking at braided line it's 20? Does that sound normal? I just fish from the bank at parks and little rivers I can find, so nothing serious. I've ordered a Pflueger President LE size 30 which should come today but I'm not sure which braided line to get from Walmart. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted April 7, 2016 Super User Posted April 7, 2016 No, line should not cost as much is the Rod. Some of us would be paying 300 to $400 for line Get yourself some 15 or 20# power pro for 12$ and call it good . You're just doing this for fun there's no need to get fancy. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Line is a consumable product unlike the Rod. The cost of a spool of braid and some leader material will offset the mono or Fluor you'll go thru over a few seasons unless you don't fish much at all. 1 Quote
blckshirt98 Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Apples and oranges, really no relation between the two. Buy a line appropriate for the species/technique/reel, irregardless of how much the rod cost. 1 Quote
777 Posted April 7, 2016 Author Posted April 7, 2016 Thanks for the replies I guess I'm on the right track. I worded the title wrong. I didn't mean if you buy, say a $150 rod that you buy $150 line. I just wasn't sure if I was missing something using $20 line on a $30 rod (seems like I should spend more on the rod or less on the line.). Thanks for the recommendation iabass8! I will look and buy the 20# powerpro. Quote
tstraub Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 I struggle with justifying the cost of high end line as well. That's why I go with Big Game for mono and I recently bought 300 yard spool of KastKing braid off ebay for $11 and change. I have not had a lot of time on the water with the KastKing but so far it seems to be good enough for me. It handles well for casting and does not dig in any worse that the Suffix that I have on another reel. Dig in just seems to be something you get when you set the hook on a snag with braid. My only complaint is that the color bleeds really bad the first time you get it wet. I mean my thumb turned green and my reel was dripping with green water the first day. Everything cleaned up easily without leaving a stain and the bleeding stopped after the first day so I can live with that. Tyler Quote

On a serious note, spend what you're comfortable spending on what works best for you. I use everything from $5 mono to $45 fluorocarbon on rods that cost 10x what you're using. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted April 7, 2016 Super User Posted April 7, 2016 Line is like ammunition for guns; it is just a matter of time that the cost of either will exceed the price of the rod or gun. This happens quickly with budget rods or guns. Line is the link between you and your fish and is not the place to get too cheap IMO. There are many recommendations and reviews on this site and countless others online elsewhere. Buy a highly rated line that best fits your budget and enjoy. Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted April 7, 2016 Super User Posted April 7, 2016 berkley lightning is a great rod, have 2 of them myself along with some other much more expensive rods and they catch fish just the same! i'd put some 10 or 15 pound power pro braid on there and you'll have a great all around set up. nice choice on the pflueger president too, they make great spinning reels.
