I've been seeing a lot of cheap BPS Baitcaster combos. They seem real nice and have good reviews. Any comments?

Wouldn't get any of the cheaper combo's to be honest. But the PQ/Carbonlite combo and up are great rods and reels. I have about 10 of them. Also have some carbonlite reels paired with the rod and some JMS reels with the rod. BPS rods and reels is majority of what I fish and I have never had an issue. But I do stay with the "higher end" of the line

I don´t pay any attention to reviews, most of the reviews on "cheap" combos are done by people who don´t fish on a regular basis so they don´t put the gear to real wear and tear. BPS has good rods and junk rods, the same applies to reels, some combos are good or even excellent and others are utter trash; "higher end" ( like for example a ProQualifier reel paired to a an Extreme rod ) are the ones you want to purchase.

Awesome! thank you both. Yea that makes a lot of sense with the reviews.

I tend to stay away from the pre assembled cheap combos and pick both the rod and the reel out separately. They have a vastitude of combos in their catalog that are decent like Raul said. Buying the combo deals with their higher end stuff will save you money.

also, they have combos with their house rods and other brand reels that are discounted.

I have a Megacast combo.  It's not great but it's good enough for the price.  It was my main rod for a couple of years I caught lots of bass, and a few carp and catfish around 5 or 6 pounds it handled them fine.  I only once got a hook in a fish that it could not handle.  I was throwing a spoon downstream of a dam trying for crappie, walleye, or anything that would bite.  Something grabbed it a and started running hard,  I cranked down the drag to try to slow it down but it just kept taking more line.  It took all of my braided main line and I was into the backer and close to getting spooled.  So I clamped my thumb on the spool and tried to turn that fish but he just kept going. Then the line went slack and I reeled in my spoon with a hook that had been straightened.  I have no idea what it might have been but I was out gunned that day.

Anyway I have since got more expensive gear but still use the Megacast  fairly often it's a bit harder to get it tuned in on the settings than a lot of my other reels but once you get it dialed in it casts well enough.  I probably would not buy another one but I have no regrets for buying the one I have.  At the time it really was all I could afford.

Don't get anything lower than a PQ. I have a tourney special and this thing is worse than a Shakespeare agility.

I have a number of the Extreme rods and reels that I've been very happy with. I've had a couple of them for well over 8 years now and they are still going strong.

It's strange honestly the lower end stuff is not worth purchasing, but as soon as you get to the PQ and up the value and bang for the buck is unreal. They did have some issues with the carbonlite black after the gold carbonlite but I have 2 of these reels and no issues. Have not heard any bad reviews on the new white carbonlite so maybe those production issues have been fixed? But you cannot go wrong with the extreme, carbonlite, or the JMS rods. And you cannot go wrong with the PQ, Carbonlite, JMS reels
