At some point you have to wonder if there is an issue not related to manufacturing. Most of the time that is the case. Well I have owned 35-40 st croix rods in my life. I've had 2 avids, 2 legend tournament (all spinning), and one avid casting rod with reel seat issues. The only ones that I had issues with that didn't have years of use were the newest style legend tournament spinning rods, the rear part of the reel seats came loose, and 1 avid. St. Croix fixed those LT rods free of charge and admitted they had a lot of these rods returned with the same problem. The other two avid spinning rods had the front reel seat come loose and spin after years of use, this is NOT an uncommon problem with avids just take a few minutes and do a Google search. Both those rods I had to pay $75 to have replaced which was fine by me. The avid casting rod had the reel seat nut crack after many years of use which I also had to pay $75 to have replaced. Was it my fault the nut cracked? Possibly but I'm not sure, st.croix determined it was. I have an avid spinning rod on the way to st.croix now with a front reel seat that came unglued that is less than a year old. I'm more than satisfied with my st croix rods 6 out of 35 or so ain't bad. By all means though please continue to bash me and say it's my fault that I've had a few rods with reel seat issues.
Super User K_Mac Posted April 9, 2016 Super User Posted April 9, 2016 Many of us damage an occasional rod, although I have been fishing for many years with only a few. Based on your posts admitting you have had many warranty repairs and replacements over the years, I think a case can be made that you might be part of the problem. Yes sometimes rods fail due to defects, but most failures after even limited use are not because of material or manufacturing defects. When buying quality rods I accept that the cost of ownership is higher and if I damage them it is on me. I am an advocate of limited warranties. It seems a more honest way of doing business to me. 3

Hahahaha. Yes I'm the problem...you caught me. How dishonest of me to use a lifetime warranty on used rods and pay 75 bucks to have them replaced. I guess I should have just thrown them away I feel so ashamed now. 6 rods out of over 35 in 15+ years of owning st croix rods is "many warranty claims" to you? Two of which st.croix admitted were thier fault.

I've always had to pay ALL of the fees they charge for every st.croix rod I've sent to them. I'm not expecting anything for free, I just don't really see how st croix customer service is so much better compared to other rod manufacturers. I've gotten many replacement rods free of charge no questions asked from other manufacturers, that's never happened with st.croix. I have a avid spinning rod on the way there as we speak with a broken reel seat, I'll post back on what happens. I am looking at your above statement Nick S. You can spin this anyway you want to. I am done here. 2

I'm not trying to spin anything, and I don't see what you are trying to prove by saying you're looking at my statement. I'm happy with my st croix rods and will continue to buy them. I still don't think st.croix has the great customer service everyone claims. Like I said though I've had to pay all thier fees everytime. Edit: Now that I think about it on the two LT spinning rods I only had to pay the $20 return shipping fee on one of them because they shipped them together.
