Got the news today of the passing of this legend, the report included that today was also his 79th birthday.

A tremendous talent who wrote over 700 songs and made a huge impact in country music as well as a lot of lives, your music will live on Hag!

Thoughts and prayers are sent out to family and friends, truly a great loss, may God bless and be with you all.

Look at it this way: his music is still here and he's 'upstairs' jamming with Johnny Cash again.

My dad was always jamming on some Merle or George Jones back in the day!  i always like just stay here and drink, but being born in Montana the song Big City always resonated with me!

"I'm tired of this dirty old city
And tired of too much work
And never enough play
And I'm tired of these dirty old sidewalks
Think I'll walk off my steady job today
Turn me loose, set me free
Somewhere in the middle of Montana
And give me all I've got coming to me
And keep your retirement and your
So called Social Security
Big city turn me loose and set me free
Been working everyday since I was twenty
Haven't got a thing to show
For anything I've done
There's folks who never work
And they've got plenty
Think it's time some guys like me had some fun
So turn me loose, set me free
Somewhere in the middle of Montana
And give me all I've got coming to me
And keep your retirement and your
So called Social Security
Yeah big city turn me loose and set me free"

Always a great song, I believe he could have sang the phone book and made it a number one hit.

My father introduced me to his music way, way back, my first song I learned to play on the guitar was Silver Wings, I watched a show on TV called Moving On with Claud Akins and Frank Converse, I couldn't wait for the show to come on because I loved the song he sang, mostly because it had my name in it (Sonny) LOL but, I would pick up my Uncles Fender Telecaster and play along every time.

So many great hits from him that if I had to choose a favorite, I don't think I could.

silver wings is my dad's favorite... he and his sisters would sing it every time my family got together!

I don't play guitar, but i did learn how to play my all time favorite "folsom prison blues"!  i imagine johnny, merle, george and many others are having a jam session in the sky today!

I don't wish to be dead but what an event that would be to sit in on man, if they are having a jam session though, I would bet my last dollar that my Dad is there LOL !

Good stuff buzzed bait !! thanks for the conversation !!!

Got to hear him in concert in the 80s in Gainesville Fl. I liked a lot of his songs but probably my 2 favorites were Walking on the fighting side of me and mama tried.

I've seen him several times, non of the hoopla, monkey dancing going on in his performances, just let his voice do the work for him... and I still enjoyed it!!

Out of all his songs probably the one I enjoyed the most was "fightin side of me"
