MikeOGNR Posted April 6, 2016 Posted April 6, 2016 Hey guys I have my own property up in NH about 3 acres it's pretty thick woods no fields or anything. If I was to put out some bait or food at a specific area that I would sit at too hunt them what should I put out? I don't wanna plant anything I just wanna throw piles of stuff out for them to eat such as apples as an example. What would be my best bet? Quote
Kevin22 Posted April 6, 2016 Posted April 6, 2016 First step is to see what is legal in NH. The people I know who FEED deer (not baiting for hunting!) use apples, pears, peaches, anything sweet. 1 Quote

Super User clayton86 Posted April 7, 2016 Super User Posted April 7, 2016 Make sure it's legal first it's a big no no here in NY even if your not hunting you can't feed wild life but some how putting road kill deer out and sitting waiting for coyotes is legal. Quote

BrownBear Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 A jar of peanut butter brings them in too! And its easy to remove/cleanup. 1 Quote
holeshot Posted July 22, 2016 Posted July 22, 2016 shelled corn kernels really works well...(I have found that just plain corn works better than flavored or vitamin fortified) only problem is that most everything loves it from skunks to blackbirds....best place to get it is from a local farmer (& who knows what might arise from that),,...Tractor Supply & Walmart also has 50lb bags for 7 or 8 bucks....tape a jar of peanut butter to a tree about knee high and cut a hole big enuf to let them get their tongue in the jar, it will not last long.......Be sure that baiting is legal in your area....we only do it before season and use a game camera to find out what is on our property, cause it is illegal to kill a deer over bait in the area we hunt... 1 Quote

Mike , what kind of natural food is on your property for the deer to eat? And what I would suggest is a very important question: Is there snow on the ground when you are hunting? Quote

Also there is a small far across the road that's like a hay field Quote
wnspain Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 Most here in Oklahoma use corn, seems they can't hunt without it. I'd rather hunt somewhere where it's illegal but then it does have a purpose, it concentrates all the hunters who shouldn't be in the woods with a loaded gun. Easier to avoid them that way... 1 Quote

Also there is a small far across the road that's like a hay field Sorry it took so long to respond - been busy. The only thing about simply throwing corn on the ground is that other "critters" can get to it just as easily as deer. Squirrels , Birds, Turkeys(here in the south),Wild hogs( also here in the south) and various other creatures. We have to have feeders down here. Also, I don't know that simply throwing corn on the ground works. Deer tend to go where there is food all the time. If you are hunting a spot where deer are or you know there is activity there then I say go for it. However, I would say that you are likely to have more success with salt blocks. I don't know that squirrels don't mess with those but I haven't seen one do it. And my last statement contained a type- o. I meant to ask-"is there snow on the ground when you hunt?" - Im ignorant of the type of hunting done in NH... I would assume there would be but I had to ask .... . I don't know how well corn or any of these options holds up to extreme temperatures... Just another thing to consider... Quote
BaitMonkey1984 Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 I don know about feeding them to just feed them. I like deer, enjoy seeing them, but other than a few nutrient blocks I don't give them anything.Black Magic or Swamp Donkey work great as well. I dont want them to get used to someone else feeding them. Plus, a lot of people who feed deer corn down realize that this can lead to fatality by over eating corn. Easy to do with 50lb bags of Corn for sale for $10.00. I know some hunters in Rumney, NH where I hunt set up bait stands for various animals (deer, bear, etc) and I believe everything needs to be labeled with your information, and there are certain additional restrictions. Please call your local game warden because you dont want to risk fines, your catch, and your next year hunting license. Quote

Here in PA its illegal to bait deer but you can plant clover plots and corn on your property. I know people living in development in the poconos who feed deer and turkey year round. There was even a couple in the poconos who lured a bear into their living room (yup you can see it coming) using donuts. While in the house the bear got spooked and ran around the living room destroying the furniture and creating havoc. Eventually the bear ran down the hallway and through the screen door. The couple actually video taped it and when the Game Commission guys saw it they were not happy. Ended up fining the couple and had to kill the bear. Should have been the other way around. Quote
