Bubba_Bruiser Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 I finished up this rod on a CRB orange blank for TN Vols them. You wanna talk some wrapping time, whew. I had to double wrap and coat everything to keep it from bleeding though. Any hints to solve that problem? Bright orange and white are tough to mix. But I like the way it turned out. I hate I didn't get a picture of the tiger wrap and the fish in front of the foregrip. I am going to have to track the guy down and take some of it. Quote
Super User Sam Posted December 9, 2010 Super User Posted December 9, 2010 Very nice job. I hope the guy has better success with the rod than the football team. Quote
Bubba_Bruiser Posted December 10, 2010 Author Posted December 10, 2010 Yeah, you know you're not a fair weather friend when you build a rod after something hahahaha. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 That white over orange is tough. Depending on the contrast of the colors, sometimes I can get away with packing the thread really tight as I go and use CP. If that's not working, I tape off the blank and paint the area where the light color thread will go. What you have here looks good, the extra effort paid off. How do you like the CRB blanks? Quote
Bubba_Bruiser Posted December 11, 2010 Author Posted December 11, 2010 For a $20 dollar blank. I think it's a pretty nice rod. The guy I built it for, loved it. It came as a M-F blank, but I wouldn't be scared to call it a MH-F. I also built this one off of the green CRB blank. And also had to double wrap everything for it too. Quote
ernel Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 To avoid the extra weight added by the under wrap, I would recommend taping off the blank and painting the thread wrap ares white as was mentioned above. Just make sure you use a paint that will not interact with the finish. If you have an airbrush, it is very simple to achieve without having an issue with over spray. If not, I would use very wide masking tape. Anytime you use a light color over a dark blank, you will have some issue with bleed through. Some times NCP or metallic thread will help if it is packed very well. Packed about every third wrap, and burnished very well after the wrap is complete. Nice job on the wraps. Quote
Bubba_Bruiser Posted December 12, 2010 Author Posted December 12, 2010 I used Gudebrod NCP White, but it turned it peach and the back chrome on the guides shined like a diamond. I packed and burnished pretty hard too. Maybe I burnished too much and flattened it out. But I might try painting the area and the guide feet if I do it again with the heavy contrast. Quote
Super User .RM. Posted December 12, 2010 Super User Posted December 12, 2010 Nice work!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote
Super User MickD Posted March 10, 2011 Super User Posted March 10, 2011 The new Mudhole Pro Wrap color fast is considered to be very good for maintaining its color. People who have commented on it still use CP with it in a really challenging application like this, and recommend being very careful about wrapping with no gaps, packing, and burnishing. I think painting under the wraps with a color similar to the final thread color is the easiest and most foolproof method, then us color fast + the other tips. Belts and suspenders without as much work. Quote
Bubba_Bruiser Posted March 10, 2011 Author Posted March 10, 2011 I am finishing up a John Deere colored rod on this same blank and of course ran in to the same problem using the yellow thread (Fishhawk Nylon). I couldn't find a bright enough yellow in the PW selection. I under wrapped with a metallic silver and was pleased with it. But I think next time I use on of these blanks, I am going to section off and try to use one of the metallic sharpies for painting instead of under wrapping. Has anyone tried this yet? Quote
hookingem Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Very nice job.I hope the guy has better success with the rod than the football team. Sam you LSU Tiger you! Nice rod the wrapping work looks super involved. Quote
