Alright this is my first post, but I wanted to share my day at El Dorado. I started early around 7:30 at the old ranger station then I worked my way around the lake. I had my personal best day at the lake with 6 bass. It was a fun day. Here are a couple pictures.

Is that El Dorado park in Long Beach Ca?

I used to go there on family picnics when I was little and catch bluegills with my cousin, we should have been using them for bait.

Yes this is the lake in Long Beach CA. The blue gill bite is going to pick up pretty soon. I will be taking my daughter out to get some gills. There are people who use bluegill for live bait to catch bass at this lake as well, also a bluegill swim bait is used to get bass. Most of my luck is on drop shot and crank baits.

Word of advice, DO NOT USE LIVE BLUEGILL FOR BAIT!!! THIS IS ILLEGAL AND WILL COST YOU $$$ when caught.  The rangers there are on it and you will get busted and there are a few regulars that fish there and will let you know it's illegal at which point you take the hint or blow them off.  I've seen several local lakes ruined by guys fishing live bluegill.  You loose the forage fish and most end up gut hooking the bass.....well done, killed two fish with one stone.  Most regulars have the rangers cell number in their phones and will use it to protect their lake from people that choose to fish illegally even after letting them know.  But that park can be a good fishery at times, just gets a lot of pressure.

Using Bluegill for bait is legal in Florida when caught using proper methods. One should always consult local laws when fishing in unfamiliar areas.

I've never had any issues with gut hooked bass, use of circle hooks prevents this. Using bluegills is a nice way for kids to catch bass any enjoy the sport, personally I prefer using artificial baits and have seen just as many or more gut hooked bass on plastic worms as circle hooked live bait. Either way just cut the line and the hook will clear on its own.

I did not know that. Its a good thing I just use artificial lures. I have been stopped by Rangers before asking if I had any luck and asked to look at my license. They are pretty friendly, if your not doing any thing illegal I guess. Now that I know this I will be on the look out for it. I have fished this lake for 15 plus years and I like that it is local and not crowded. I want to be able to keep catching bass here. Thanks for the info.
