BronzeChaser Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Years ago I bought a bps pro qualifier for my first "serious" bass fishing baitcasting reel and loved it. Since that time I have bought a lot more reels and am mostly a shimano guy now. With that being said though, the PQ still surprises me to this day. The durability, the way it handles, casts and just feels is really surprising to me compared to reels twice as much in cost. It might have a "dated" style look to it, they haven't changed since I got my first one 6 or 7 years ago, but they are workhorse reels for sure. So now onto the reason I don't buy them anymore. They're just heavy. I can get past the looks, they aren't that bad looking but they aren't exactly sexy either. But the weight is just to much for what I've grown accustom to. They are about an ounce or more heavier than most of my other reels. So am I the only one who thinks Bass Pro should redo this reel pretty much exactly the same, but just knock some weight off it? If they did that I would be all over this reel again and probably buy a few, I wouldn't mind a slight cost increase either, as they're always on sale and can be had now for $70. Either way the reel as it is now is by far a slamming deal at $70. Does anyone feel this way or am I the only one? lol 2 Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted April 3, 2016 Super User Posted April 3, 2016 I'm a devoted Shimano guy myself and I too have 4 PQ's. I myself wouldn't change anything about them. But then I am kind of old school. You know, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"....lol. Hootie 2 Quote
Poolshark Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 I agree the bps pq is a decent reel for the money, and it is a tad on the heavy side. But they have the carbonlite still in the "value" spectrum for those who might prefer a lighter bps brand reel. Not a big fan of that one, but it's there. 1 Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted April 3, 2016 Super User Posted April 3, 2016 The PQ is awesome, I have three of them. They are perfect for some of my setups. They balance well on my carbon lite rods. So they are permanent fixture on them. They also balance on my Shimano Clarus crank bait rod. To me balance is better than lightweight. The weight of the PQ helps in those situations. I am also a Shimano guy. 3 Quote
CarolinaBoy4Life Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 85% of the reels I fish are BPS reels along with BPS rod's. With that being said I have many many PQ's. Tank for a reel in my opinon. Never had any issues with them. Probably the best reel dollar for dollar that I own in all honesty. The reason they haven't changed it is because it is so wildly popular and successful. Its their flagship reel besides the JMS reel. They also had a killer lightweight reel in the gold carbonlites and they changed them and people did not like it (I own two of the black carbonlites, love them as well). In my opinion they don't want to alter the PQ frame and design simply because it works and with previous changes they did were not well accepted. Just my two cents. Quote
cottny27 Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 I wish they would bring the PQ Tournament back. Same reel just almost 2oz lighter and duralumin gears, shaft, etc. Its hard for me to go back to "yesterdays" gear after fishing with sub 6oz reels for the past few years. Quote

I saw the PQ Tournament when it was for sale and thought that it was the perfect creation lol. I made up my mind to buy one. So I went to the site and they were gone. Too late for me. If I knew they were limited I would've bought 2 or 3 probably. Who knows maybe they'll come back. Quote

Yes, back in about 2011 they had em in store for $79. Very very good buy. They are hard to find now. Quote
S. Sass Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 Lighter verson would be nice. I agree that it would or could mess up the reputation of the reel though. They never just fix the issues when trying to update stuff. You know they would go changing the entire design and it wouldn't even remotely resemble the BPQ when they finished other than the name. Anyway I have no issues with mine although a ounce lighter would be nice if they only lightened it. Quote
CarolinaBoy4Life Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 Yeah whenever they do a change it always seem's to be more than just minor issues. I have a couple of the gold carbonlites and have no idea why they would ever change that design. I heard it was due to manf. contracts but that reel was a real winner. Smooth and light as can be. For a heck of a price. Quote
