GTHenson Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 My friend "That Guy" is my sub partner that fishes with me when my other partner cant make a tournament. He is an outdoor writer and is a solid fisherman, but every time I pull up to a mat to punch grass it seems like he has to go through every rod box and storage compartment in my boat, I have no idea what he is looking for but he will be slamming boxes left and right. It drives me crazy. But a good friend none the less. Quote
You_Only_Live_Once_Fishing Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 my friend gets hung up with my expensive lures every cast, manage to snag up in a sand bottom creek six times in 5 casts 1 Quote
CTD6677 Posted April 11, 2016 Posted April 11, 2016 A gentlemen that I fish quite a bit with (either on his boat or mine) is notorious for his ghost hook sets. I've never met a person that gets more "bites" than him and by gosh he never misses a monster hook set on any of them. Granted, hook sets are free, but he is excessive. Also loves to fish the most unproductive water he can find. Has the electronics on his boat to find fish but doesn't really know how to use it so he goes to the same spots every time, throws the same three lures (buzz bait, spinnerbait, and chiggercraw) even though his boat is packed with stuff and hauls water for hours. But he is family and we have fun regardless. 2 Quote
Wbeadlescomb Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 I'm sure I've been that guy at times.I know I talk to much but that's just my nature I can make friends with complete strangers. But the main buddy I fish with fishes the same way I do. Both of us can catch fish and we've been fishing tournaments together for almost 10 years. We just about know what the other one is thinking by this point. But then there is "the guy" he had never done much more than fish a pond and he decides to buy a bass boat and fish tournaments. I didn't know he hadnt fished much before and couldn't figure why he was asking a million questions about what lures he needed or what I was going  to throw that day. Finally after the third trip I told him just to let me look in this huge tackle bag he has there were two small pond spinnerbaits and a couple of little crankbaits. I started making him a list of basic baits to get and try that are almost guaranteed to catch fish in our area. The poor guy didn't even know what a shakey head was. I hooked him up with some shakey heads soft plastics finesse jigs frogs and swim jigs  that I really like and the guy finished 15th in a 125 boat tournament the other day. I had to tell him a few spots to fish to do it but it's cool helping someone out like that. My major problem with him is that he wants to keep every dang fish that we catch. I don't mind someone keeping a few to eat but dang it there isn't any reason to keep 20 everytime we go. I just toss back everything I catch thats over about a pound and a half. Quote
Psychofish Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 Ugh, "that guy" no matter what we're throwing, it's wrong. Fishing fast? He wants to fish slow. Fishing slow? He wants to move all over. I position the boat parallel with the shore, he insists on casting to the front of the boat. Turn the boat perpendicular, he wants to cast to the shore. Swears he knows what he's doing and has been doing it for years!! Yet calls even the most well known lures and rigs by the wrong name. Thinks it's the funniest thing that " have a thing for hitting  submerged trees with a lure! Don't you know you're gonna get hung up casting in there eventually!?" I try to smile and just fish, but some days I want to pitch him off the side. 1 Quote

After several trips I decided to count one night. I have fished this lake for years and I usually get 12-15 bites a day/night. The night I counted he set the hook 117 times. It was irritating for a while but It got so ridiculous I found It highly amusing. All those hook sets for 3 fish. The biggest reason we no longer fish was he would be out of his mind ticked off If I caught more fish. He constantly made the trip(s) miserable(whining, pouting, yelling, etc.) when I was having a good trip, fish wise. I had enough and to this day, even after bluntly telling him the reasons we don't fish, he constantly asks to go fishing. I hope all these stories are a good reminder that we do this to have fun, catch some fish, and get away from the daily grind. NEVER settle for being miserable, there's always a choice! Quote
96ecss Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 I have a friend who always wants to move to a new spot. Even if you're catching fish, he always has a "better" spot. The last time I fished with him was a few years ago. We spent more time driving from spot to spot than we did fishing.  Dave Quote

Every time we go out fishing on his boat if I'm catching bass and he isn't instead of changing lures to what type I'm using he moves the boat away from the area. That kills me and then neither one of use is catching any fish. Part of his problem is he only fishes the way he wants to fish. He's the guy that picks what lure he wants to use before he gets on the lake. Also he only uses a few lures. Spinnerbait, crankbait and topwater frog, thats all he uses. He's never thrown a worm, or jig and doesn't know what a dropshot rig or shakey head is. You and me both I used to fish with the same guy all the time I would be killing in on a bait and Im the type of guy that wants everyone in the boat to catch and have fun, but this dude was horrible about using the same lure all the time or saying well at the other lake i was fishing the other day this killed it on a whole different species so it must work. Drives me nuts because then at the end of the day he will complain that the fishing sucked. Oh and dont get me started on the boat moving this dude would put the boat right on top of where you would want to cast and wonder why we wouldn't catch anything. I dont fish with that guy much anymore my new partner is night and day difference, he's in it to win in no matter what it takes if I'm catching he will switch over and vise versa we dont care we wanna stick some fish sure we bust balls on each other but all in all we both swallow pride when it comes to fishing if he's got the hot bite I'm not ashamed at all to ask what he's throwing we have learned a lot from each other and our catches have just gotten better. My time on the water is limited so I want to make it count and heck one day you might be hot and another you may need a helping hand on the hot bait. At the end of the day everyone wants to catch, being a hard head is only going to end up with a lot of days ending in "the fishing sucked" Oh and the best part of the other guy was he never took anything I said worth a dang. I could be wacking em left and right and say dude tie this on, Nope kept fishing the same way as soon as someone else (especially my new fishing partner) would say hey this is working you should try it he would immediately change over. Always made me feel like the guy thought I had no clue which really makes for a hard time when your just trying to help a buddy out and he acts like YOU are the idiot. 2 Quote

And of course every time i caught another nice bass he was full blast on the TM to a new spot. I happened to mention this at a meeting I had for a local conservation group. One of the guys at the meeting spoke up and indicated he'd like to go if there was room. We'd fished together a a few times, and while he hadn't been the best partner I'd ever fished with, he hadn't been terrible. I thought about it a while and thought, "What the heck, how bad can it be?" Here's how bad: Didn't want to come up the night before and pre-pack the boat and truck so we could get going on time. One of his "tackle boxes" was a 5 gallon bucket...the other one was a 12 pack Leinie's corrugated box. Lure organization was...a pile. We were 40 minutes down the road when he remembered he'd left his passport in his truck. Sat at a different table when we stopped to eat on the way up. On the first day of fishing, at the end of the day...this plays out: When I'm done for the day in Canada, I like to spend some time straightening up the boat at the dock so it's not a three-legged cluster #@%$ in the morning...so I start doing this, putting stuff away, cleaning off fish schmutz... My fishing partner...let's call him "Bob"...picks up his three rods, his Leinie's box and his bucket and takes off for the cabin...keep in mind that there's a dozen boats at the dock, with tens of thousands of dollars worth of tackle and gear n them...all better than his... I think to myself, "What the heck?"...and then I thought, "NO problem, he's probably going to fix dinner." I finished cleaning up the boat, headed back to the cabin, walked in, where "Bob" greats me with, "Hey, I hope you've got something to eat, I just brought enough of this for myself." BTW...he was standing there drinking one of my beers... ...so I warmed up some killer chili I'd brought along...about the time it was done, he says "That sure smells good, can I have some?" I said, "Sure." and I went to bed. When I get up in the AM, the chili is still on the stove and when fumblenuts stumbles out of his bed a while later, he let me know, "Hey! You left the chili out last night." All week long, he wanted to fish for walleyes and lake trout...even though they were not biting and pike, muskies and smallies were killing each other to get to our lures. He never...not once...helped net a fish, all week. He never commented when he had a follow on a fish...in fact...the few times I saw him have a follow, he try to hide it, or flat out deny it. He's a musky guy and never boated one all week...mostly because he kept throwing huge baits when they told us, clear as a bell on day one, that they liked stuff that was about 7" - 8" long... He sulked for two days when I caught 3 muskies in an hour... He didn't offter to drive at all on the way home...just sat in the passenger seat and complained that the sun was too hot on him and that we needed to turn the A/C in the truck down (it was set at 70°). "Bob" and I don't fish together any more...he keeps asking...but oddly, I've always got all the seats in my boat full for that trip... What an odd duck. That should be the last fishing trip with him. Quote
Super User Gundog Posted April 19, 2016 Super User Posted April 19, 2016 Another nugget from "That friend". We were fishing one day on his boat and he decided to take his spool off his spinning reel (he only uses spinning gear). I think you can all see this coming cause I did. I told him not to do it. He didn't bring another reel. Well he did it anyway and loosened the cap that holds the spool on (on most models its the drag adjust but his drag is on the bottom of the reel). He pulled the spool off with the cap and the cap flew out of his hand, hit the rail of his boat and into the water. We had fished only about an hour when this happened so that ended the day for us. To this day I can't believe he did that. Quote
