krisjack69 Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 I would like to know how to rig a horny toad on a hook.I have 3/0 ewg gammy hook and a 5/0 gammy ewg hook. Quote
Banor Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 Use the 5/0. Rig it like you would a texas rig and skin hook it on top. B Quote
krisjack69 Posted May 16, 2007 Author Posted May 16, 2007 So I rig it just like a worm but have the hook come out where the slit is on his belly. Quote
RochesterBasser Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 That's what I like to do too, texas rig it through the little slit on its belly. (I also believe that a 5/0 hook works the best) Here's just a step by step... bored... First go through the nose about a 1/4 inch. Then twist around the hook the same as a texas rig to re-insert. Bend the toad a little bit toward the hookpoint and insert, making sure the hook is straight with the slit in the toad. If it isn't, the toad is going to rotate on the retrieve. Then just skin hook the point of the hook and you're ready to toad it up. Hope this helps, good luck! Quote
WhiteMike1018 Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Nice pics. Thanks, im sure a lot of people will benefit. -wm Quote
krisjack69 Posted May 17, 2007 Author Posted May 17, 2007 Thank you. That will come in handy.I already tore up one frog already trying to hook it.It just wouldn't stay on the darn hook. Quote
mike bat Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 zoom also has a toad hook .... it has a little cork screw wire that is attached to the eye of a 5odd hook .... you screw the nose of the toad on the cork screw wire and just rigg the hook point the same way as shown above ;D i use them and really like the system Quote
armesjr Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 I use the same system as Mike bat, and it works really well. One tip for using this hook system, is to close the hook eyelet all the way with your pliers before you fish, the little cork screw has a tendency to pop out when you catch a big fish and then it can be difficult to get back in place. KenDammit28 Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 along with what the pictures show, I also like to put the hook-eye into the frogs nose. I feel like its more weedless and also stays on the hook better. another tip when fishing horny toads or any other frogs(they all will start sliding off the hook) is to get some super glue and dab a little right below the eye on the shank..then slide your frog up on it...it will surely stick so long as everything is dry when you apply the glue. linesider7 Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 Horny toad hooks are the way to go. I caught the below pictured fish, one before, and one after, all on the same toad. SAVE YOUR TOADS PEOPLE!!! WIDEGAPS WASTE TOADS! Quote
Pa Angler Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 Use the 5/0. Rig it like you would a texas rig and skin hook it on top. B That's what I do. Never used a color that didn't wotk. Quote
mbailz23 Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 what's the best type of rod/reel/line to use with the horny toads and how do you retrieve them? thanks, matt Quote
youngangler13 Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 i would have to say texas rig it , but use a circle hook . reason being i have missed some big fish cause the hook wasnt sticking out enough but the circle hook should prevent that problem. Quote
youngangler13 Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 when retrieving a horny toad i like to reel for a couple seconds . then jerk it . repeat Quote
Brad_Coovert Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 krisjack - My favorite toad hook is the Mustad Impact Ultralock. Next would be the Horny Toad hook. I also plan to try the double hook rig suggested in another post. mbailz - If I'm really throwing in thick nasty weeds and making long casts, I use braid and a 7'6" flipping stick. For tossing around more sparse cover, I use a 7' MH with 15 lb. YoZuri Hybrid. Retrieves can be a constant buzzbait style retrieve, stop and go, swimming under water or the deadly deadstick where you let the toad slowly fall to the bottom. Brad Quote
