Drew03cmc Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 A few things, I found an SS Jr in Baby Bass today, hooks rusted off. What size hooks and split rings should I use? Second, I have a hard time walking these baits, any advice? Quote
MPM IV Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 I don't know about the hooks, but I watched a couple of youtube videos and just started trying different speeds of reeling and twitching until it started walking. It's my favorite way to catch fish now. Good luck with it. Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted March 29, 2016 Super User Posted March 29, 2016 (edited) i wanna say size 4 hooks. and i don't quite know how to explain the walk the dog technique, but i will say that the spook and spook jr are the easiest to do it on in my opinion. one thing that does make it harder for me is using too big of line. the spook jr seems to walk much better for me on the lightest line i can get away with. Edit: added link to heddon. Definitely #4 hooks http://www.heddonlures.com/product/super-spook-jr-3/ Edited March 29, 2016 by buzzed bait link 1 Quote
0119 Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 Size 2. I use a short shank treble thats an EWG from Gamakatsu. I prefer a fairly large split ring. The one I use is from BPS's offshore angler line in stainless steel and is 2x thickness. The package is kinda messed up but I think it says #3. Good luck its addicting. I throw spook jr.'s a good 90% of the time. 2 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted March 29, 2016 Super User Posted March 29, 2016 They use a size 4 hook and if you are having a hard time waking them then I suggest replacing the hooks and rings with stock. Either use the Owner ST-36 or the Mustad KVD Elite treble, not the short shank and I'll explain why. For split rings you can get the VMC size 3, those will work fine, and the reason you don't want short shank hooks with heavy duty split rings right now is because you aren't good at walking the bait yet. When you use the short shank trebles it is for upsizing and even split rings, heavy duty ones add to the weight, if there are 2 baits you do not want to add weight to, it is a jerkbait and a topwater, especially a walking one. When you get good with walking the bait, then by all means, do whar 0119 told you to do, up size the hooks for better landing percentage and heavy duty split rings to make sure they don't bend out at all. The reason is like a said, the upgrades add weight causing the bait to sit lower in the water which will make it harder to walk when you are just learning. Remember, size #4 treble hook and a size #3 split ring. Quote
Netfish and Chill Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 I've found that I can walk-the-dog much better if I leave more slack in my line. It makes the line move and the bait float so you can get that side to side action instead of a tight line that just pulls the bait. Just my personal experience. Not sure about anyone else. Yup, I screwed up Drew, they are size 4...... sorry My purpose for short shank hooks has been to avoid getting the hooks hung up together while working the lure. My purpose of the 2x split rings is mostly because I have bycatch of much bigger/meaner fish than bass plus I hate it when cheap rings stay slightly bent open after being opened like so many original equipment rings the lures came with do. Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted March 30, 2016 Super User Posted March 30, 2016 Also for me anyhow using pistol grip rod with med action works best for spooks 6' and i use 10 lb big game or yo zuri. 1 Quote
papajoe222 Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 There are a number of articles on this site. I'm partial to this one. http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/zara-spook.html Quote
Super User everythingthatswims Posted March 30, 2016 Super User Posted March 30, 2016 Slack between pops, and floating line either mono or braid. Super spook jr. is a KILLER!! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 30, 2016 Global Moderator Posted March 30, 2016 Super Spook Jr is one of my favorite topwaters. Works great in all our lakes around here. #2 or #3 split rings and #4 hooks. I like regular length hooks and stick with round bend because the fish like to slap at them. They're one of the easiest baits out there to walk. Keep some slack in the line each time you twitch it to allow it freedom to glide, always twitch the rod down (it can be done other directions but that's the easiest way while you're learning), make sure you're not using fluoro or anything that will drag the nose down like a big snap. 1 Quote
