... Now my garage and desk at work are overflowing.

I've given up on trying to hide them from my wife.  There's no point anymore.

Any tips on how to keep baits stored and above all, accessible, in a space like a garage?

Garage shelving is a must, then just get clear cheap Sterlite containers(http://www.sterilite.com/SelectProduct.html?id=587&ProductCategory=179&section=1) from Target.  Make sure the shelves are adjusted and sized right to fit the Sterlites (esp the largest ones) with minimal waste of space.  Stick your Sterlites with "used often" tackle at waist/chest height, stick the Sterlites with backup/rarely used stuff on the very top or bottom shelf.

As for the Sterlites themselves, put tackle into Gallon Zip Loc Freezer bags by type so they're neatly organized.

+1. What he said. Best method I've found, especially the gallon zip locs for soft plastics.

Move all the clothes and shoes from your wife's closet to make room for all your fishing stuff. Put up all the necessary shelving. Be sure to let us know how that goes.

From personal experience, not well!

I prefer pegboards for soft plastic so you can see what you have. Then I have shelving to store 3700 boxes (labeled).

Appreciate all the experience and humor, guys.  Clear plastic makes a lot of sense for "my" space so I can find my stuff.  Pegboard also good idea too and like some other projects around the house... I'll get around to it... (once the topwater bite dies off a bit).

As for the closet takeover idea, well, I've just got back into fishing in the last couple of years, and I don't have so many baits that I need THAT much space yet.

Ditto on the pegboard and keeping them in the original packaging.

I procured some milk crates that I stack in the corner of my closet, I use gallon bags to keep everything in order in the crates.

I use pegboards. My garage looks like a very unorganized tackle shop.

For soft plastics, I like to use plastic shoe boxes that I get at Walmart.  Several times per year they go on sale for around a buck a piece at Walmart.    Every time you go to Walmart, look and see if they are one sale, and if so, but ten bucks worth.

There are two kinds - the kind with the separate lids and the kind with attached lids.   I like the attached lids better.  Buy a roll of white duct tape and a sharpie so that you can make labels that last.    I think that I'm at around 60 or 70 boxes now, and the next time they're on sale I'm pretty certain I'll get another dozen.

Hard plastics & terminal tackle, over the years I've accumulated numerous 3700 size plano boxes, so I just sort the various baits into different plano boxes.
