Help with Buzzbait and Spinnerbaits needed

I am planning on ordering some buzzbaits and spinnerbaits for the upcoming season and wanted to ask for some advice as applied to smallmouth.

I have a few buzzbaits but mostly in white and white/chartreuse in 1/8oz, 1/4oz and 3/8oz. I lose a few to chain pickeral so i need to pick up a few more. I am looking at the Cavitrons, Strike King and War Eagle so wanted to get some advice on what color and maybe what size that I should stick with?

In regards to spinnerbaits, my main question is about style. I have quite a few but none that are really great at "burning"m which is what I wanted to get into. They are either too light, don't have the right blade combination or don't track well enough to be burned. I am hoping for some suggestions on which could be designed for "burning". Also weight and color preference as well if you don't mind.

The smallmouth up here are smaller, of which a 4 pounder would be considered a giant. Lakes are mostly clear with no crayfish

For burning I always go double willow.  My favourite colours for small mouth even though pike also go wild is white and white and chart.  Just have to live with it.  I use boo yah and strike king.  For buzz baits I have white and white/chart too.  I also have black.  I find though Color doesn't seem to matter much.  As long as they are well made.

Spinnerbait: Siebert Outdoors Cosmic, double willow blades

For the larger size you can't beat Cavitron. Do a forum search for it and you'll see member after member attesting to their legendary status.

For smaller size I just go with cheap Strike King Mini-Pro Buzzbait.

I make my own spinner baits and buzz baits , that way you get better hooks and can customize skirts and blade combos at will.  I make my own 1/8 oz buzzbaits cause there are not any good smaller baits on the market .  I love an 1/8 oz buzz bait with a berkly power wit ripple shad trailer for casting weight .  It's a perfect size for smallmouth . Spinner baits with shorter arms and smaller blades are easier to burn , replace a number 4 willow leaf with a 3 and shorten the arm and u are ready to go.

The 3/8oz Cavitron in black on black is my go to buzzbait. I never target smallmouth with a buzzbait though, they're always incidental catches while fishing for largemouth, but I've caught plenty on that bait. 

If you like burning a spinnerbait, I'd get the War Eagle Screaming Eagle. It's one of my favorite smallmouth spinnerbaits because it's a 1/4oz frame, but it weighs 1/2oz. It's a great one for fishing deeper too if you want to slow it down.

Thanks Clayton. I had no idea the Screaming Eagle was designed that way. Sounds like what I am looking for.

Pepper Custom Baits for spinnerbaits. Cloudy day 3/4oz chart/white with double chart willow blades. The heavier weight will keep the bait from blowing out of the water. Double nickel blades for sunny days. 5" white grub for trailer.

I agree I like the Pepper Custom Baits for spinnerbaits. Our Walmart keeps putting them on the clearance isle for $3.00 I have a a gallon container full of them. Extremely smooth and true running. Excellent hooks and also have a nice barb to hold trailers.

War eagle is my favorite brand of spinner bait I'm split between there buzz bait and the lunker lures. The war eagle has a bigger blade but I've been catching them on a lunker lure since I was a kid. You won't go wrong with the war eagle but take a hard look at the lunker lure buzzbait. Especially the copper blade with a chartreuse skirt.

I've got my fair share of custom spinnerbaits for smallies. Most of them are chart/white with colored blades. As others have suggested go with a double willow for burning and a single or double colorado blade for slow rolling. I prefer spooks and poppers for small mouth also sammys.  My go to buzzbait is a cavitron but I did pick up some boogermans before they closed down.

Also take a look at Premier League Lures they have a number of different offerings.  Also G&G Spinnerbaits is a local guy in Indiana that makes to order.   Has lots of differentshapes and sizes.  For spinnerbaits I like white\chartreuse, coleslaw, purple\silver, and black

for burning spinnerbaits i dont discriminate about makes, its more about weight, blades, and color,...white,..white /chart in 1/2 or 3/4 oz sizes with double willow blades for burning,. the heavier weight will aid in keeping it under the surface. As for buzzbaits? if im to throw one its going to be a double buzz in again 1/2 or 3/4 oz sized and in the same white,..white/chsrt.,..and a silver or flashabou skirted one as well for cloudy days I rig both spinnerbaits and buzzbaits with a manns spinnerbait trailer with the very tips of the tails dipped in red dye I will bend the wires so the blades just barely tick each other as they spin,... A good buzzbait tip,...if the blade leaves a trail of bubbles on the waters surface, your in the right area,, that trail usually dictates good ph level.

Damiki makes an amazing spinnerbait called the MTS its really good for burning and has a smaller profile giving you more potential at quantity. As for buzz baits I catch all my fish on smaller double buzz with the skirt removed and a small swimbait option.... another option would be a whopper plopper...bait gets hammered

Only time I use a trailer hook is if I'm fishing mainly for smallmouth or spots. Even then I only do it if I'm missing more fish than I can live with.

Blue, they love the buzz baits where I've gone every year.  Up in Northern Ontario where smallmouth is more dominant and/ or the only bass.  Maybe it's because everyone else thinks the same as you do and I throw them something they don't see!  I haven't seen many guys throw buzz baits in general come to think of it.

We don't have largemouth up here so fishing for smallmouth. When you do use a trailer is there a size ratio? 1/4oz spinnerbait use a 1/0 or 2/0 trailer hook and on up from there for example?
