M.kemmerly Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Hello, So I have been looking for a new casting rod and I came across several on tackle warehouse priced fairly well, some from Diawa, Cashion, Lews, and Ducket. I know there are technique specific rods as well, but right now I'm looking for a versatile more multipurpose type setup. I fish a lot of soft plastics but also use jigs, spinner baits, and top water lures. I'm kind of at a loss trying to pick a rod length and action that has enough sensitivity and power to fish a variety of lures (also one that doesn't break the bank). I was curious if you guys could suggest a rod that would work for my fishing styles and my wallet. Also if you have any other brand suggestions please comment! Thanks Ill take any advice you have. -Michael Quote
Wbeadlescomb Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Just find something in your budget in a 7 foot medium heavy. These rods are so advanced today that any of them will be sensitive enough to do what you want. If you have an academy sports in your area go get one of the blue h20 express ethos rods. Quote
Bruce424 Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Yea somthin between 6'6" - 7' mh will be great whatever your comfortable with. I had a 6'6" mhf cheap daiwa rod that I did everything on. platstics jigs spinnerbaits buzzbaits even squarebills. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted March 27, 2016 Super User Posted March 27, 2016 Another good place to keep an eye on. Selections change, so check on a regular basis. The very first one listed wouldn't be a bad place to start. A 6'9" MHF Villain at 60% off. I m also a fan of the Elite Tech Smallmouth rods. My favorite of those currently listed for sale would be the 6'10" MH-MF although it probably wouldn't be considered quite as good an all-around rod as the 6'9" MHF Villain or 6'9" MHF ET Smallmouth. I like my Fenwick HMG rods and the 7'2" MF with its rating of 1/4-1 oz. puts it solidly in the MHF category and at $58.88 is an excellent rod for the money. BTW, welcome to the forum. Quote
Fishin' Fool Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 Dobyns Fury 703C or 704C. $109.95 and if you order through American Legacy and sign up for the mailing list get $25 off. Quote

What you have to do is get a rod that will work across the weight ranges you intend to use. For example, if you like throwing 1/2oz spinnerbaits and then a 1/8oz tiny torpedo top water, well that can present a problem. So what is the smallest lure you plan to fish with it and the largest bait you plan to use? Once you know that you can narrow down the choices, at least you didn't say crankbaits, that opens an entire new can of worms. Quote
