Too much to remember so far. Been having issues with my leader knot snapping, using the knot where you make a loop in the leader, put the braid through and wrap 6 times, then wrap back down 6 times and back out through the loop. The name escapes me. Using 15lb power pro and and yozuri hybrid leader. Not sure why it keeps snapping.

The most upsetting for me so far has been one of my Seibert spinner baits I got hung in a tree.

This isn't from 2016 but it's worth telling as a cautionary tale.

In late February of 2015 on a beautiful overcast and unusually warm 70's day I was kayak fishing on Germantown Lake in VA. Air temp 72 degrees, water temp 40 degrees. I was set and ready to go with rods and tackle loaded. Dressed in layers. As I arrived at my chosen spot I was uncomfortable with my seat position, it was in the high location. So I went about adjusting it.

I couldn't catch my breath at first. I knew I wouldn't drown because I had my PDF on (always, hot or cold). I couldn't touch bottom but I remember looking at my Lowrance and knew I was in 8 to 9 feet of water. But the water was sooo COLD. Mostly I was terrified of having a heart attack and being a floating popsicle for my wife to see. I quickly grabbed ahold of my capsized kayak and side stroked to shore. The going was ever so slow. I was praying out loud to GOD to save me, and hoping to get some ground under my feat. I still couldn't control my breathing.

I finally got to shallow water and hauled my kayak and my soaking wet ass to dry ground. I was freezing. Hyperventilating. Trembling. There was nowhere close to go for help. But back across the lake to my truck. I finally got some semblance of composure back, righted my kayak, and secured various items on board. It was then I noticed what was missing.

Three GLoomis rood and one St. Croix. Three Shimano's and one Abu Garcia, grand total $1600.00. I retrieved one rod light enough to float the end.

paddled, nervously, across the lake to the boat ramp. Hauled the kayak ashore. Walked like a drunk to my truck and sat in it with heat on high until I could feel my bones again.

It was so stupid what I did. I knew better. I knew it when I leaned forward, pulling on the seat, and felt the kayak move underneath me.

I went back later dragging a stringer with all the hooks open and retrieved one setup. My newest GLoomis and Curado I series. The rest are down there. Somewhere.

$1600 in 8-9 feet of water? YBYA I'd be out there in rented scuba gear as soon as the water warms up!

Water was just a little warmer when I went in about a month ago. I'm really thankful for my survival training from work and the mentality that has been beaten into me. That feeling when you know you're going over sucks. The water took my breath away instantly and all I could think to do at first was try to find somewhere to hold onto the kayak to keep myself up. Once I got a grip on my kayak though, I calmed down and assessed my situation and what I needed to do. I knew I had to get out of the water fast. I was in the middle of a bunch of standing timber so swimming didn't seem like a good option because I wasn't going to be able to drag the yak too and I was afraid I'd get hung up on a limb and not have the dexterity to get myself loose. My first attempt was unsuccessful, but the second time I got it righted. My big mistake here was I'd never tried to do this before. I know I should have gone and practiced flipping my kayak back over from the water before I ever used it, but I got lucky and managed to do it live. I used one of the trees to help steady my kayak and managed to get myself on top of it and out of the water. By that time a guy in a boat had got to me and was helping me get steady and was collecting any gear that was floating for me.

After I sat for a minute and collected myself and my gear from the helpful boater, I had to collect my poor dog that was soaked and watching me from the bank at this point. Surprisingly, she jumped right back on the kayak with me.

My loss wasn't nearly that bad though. 2 rods were missing, and the guy in the boat managed to snag one for me, so the only rod I lost was a St. Croix Triumph with a Shimano Slade. The Virb hurt for sure, I thought I had it secured to my seat with a flexible tripod but apparently not. My phone was in a water resistant case that I thought floated, but again I was apparently wrong.

Glad you made it out of your situation alive Semper. Good job wearing your PFD (I know I was glad I had mine), and sorry to hear about your gear.

lost a lucky craft pointer last season.  this season so far is a 6th sense ****** in chrometreuse shad color.  i immediately ordered another.   i did lose a megabass s crank 1.5 for two days but lucky for me it was at my pond and the fish somehow got the lure out itself.  i was able to find it floating by the bank in some weeds. i think my knot failed me on that one

So far I have had one SK KVD jerkbait and one SK Red Eye Shad bit off by pike, and have lost one jig to a laydown.

Posted

Skitter walk, skitter prop (*&$@), and in a minor heartbreaker, an old Rebel jumpin' minnow with unique colors.   At the blistering pace of 1 beloved topwater bait every ten minutes.

Aren't topwaters meant to be tossed into heavy cover? (I know better).

I got bit once and couldn't stop tossing them into this one pocket.  Like a gambler at the slots that just couldn't stop pulling that lever.

the fishing gods played a good april fools   on me thinking i had a chance to catch a fish and not lose anything.

lost a jerkbait and jig with a baby brush hog both on their first casts.

Lost a couple lucky craft deep cranks and a couple small swimbaits on a recent trip.

Posted

Megabass Knuckle 60 in Setsuki Ayu. Got a nip beyond my eyesight, then right when I could see it closer to the boat, the pike in question bit again, turned, I swung, aaaannnd... Steeee-rike! Snapped right off.

so after losing my chatterbait the first day of trying one out ive decided to take note of all the tackle i lost or broke.

ive already went through 2 bags of yum dingers

3 jigs- 1 snapped off mid cast the other got snagged. (updated 3-30-16)

2 chatterbait - snapped off mid cast. that feel when you see your brand new lure snap off in the middle of a cast and watch it sail off and plop into the water.

lost one during lunch at a new spot. (updates 3-30-16)

2 jerk bait -i smashed this against something in the middle of a cast. i dont even know how thats possible but i guess i just got that magic touch. *updated  4-1-16*

1 spinner

1 jig head and brush hog on its first cast

ill be updating daily since i seem to lose something every outing.

If you're losing that many mid cast you might wanna start checking your knots/line more often bud, I've been there before too. As soon as I hear any "grit" noise going through my rod, I cut the line and retie.

I haven't lost anything yet this year (which now means I'm about to) but I did put a lipless crank right into a tree a few days back. I just climbed the tree and cut the line, got my red eye shad back. :)

First cast ever using a rattle trap and was in awe by how far it was flying........so much so that I didn't notice it heading for a branch about 30 ft above the water. Bye.

Same day exploded another lipless crankbait against a dock.

i lost 3 spinnerbaits in 4 hours yesterday....  snapped 2 off and when i somehow cast the 3rd one off into the abyss i called it a day.

well i sent yet another spinnerbait into a tree out of reach this weekend like a moron....  terminator t1 spinnerbait at that and they don't just give those things away!  not sure what my deal is with losing spinnerbaits over the last few weeks!

i did lose a few jigs too, but i never count those as losses....  if you're not hanging a few of them up, you're not fishing them right!

Lost ole' faithful last saturday. Caught some big smallmouths and largemouths on her. I'll be going out next week sometime to see if I can find the log she is hooked on and bring her back. If not then its off to the internet to find a new brown beauty to replace her (but you know its gonna be tough). Here is the last picture it took of her.

My dad fell off the boat three weeks ago into 47 degree water, he wasn't wearing a pfd but luckily he is a certified life guard from youper land where water in the mid fifties is considered warm, so the shock wasn't as bad as it would have been otherwise.  Kind of freaked my brother and I out though cause he was under water for what seemed like an eternity, he fell over while lifting the anchor into the boat and when he fell off the rope was rapped around his hand and dragged him thirteen feet down to the bottom.  Luckily we only lost a cheap combo that the loose rope on the deck got tangled around when he fell over, and not his life.

I found that exact crank last Friday hanging in a tree. What an odd coincidence.
