1980's worm question

OK members who have been fishing longer than I have been alive......

I caught my fist "big bass" on a t-rigged worm.  This worm was clear/see through with red and blue fleck in it.  best I can remember it was a 6" curly tail worm.  Who made it?

My dad got this fish mounted for me, 4lb 9 oz when I wasn't even 7 yet.  Just wanted to be able to complete the story with the brand of worm it was.  Seemed back then the main brands were: Creme, Zoom, Culprit and Mister Twister.  Can't find that color on any of them, I am sure it is no longer made....

Sounds like some version of "fire & ice". I know culprit still produces that color, and Mister Twister has a version they make in some of thier products; maybe they used to make phenom worms in that color?

Nope. Not fire and ice. That was a staple as well. This was all the way clear- with blue and red flakes.

Yes. Very similar to that one!  Packaging doesn't look familiar but that was 25+ yrs ago....

1973 Glynn Carver of Mister Twister created curly tail grubs that led to the ribbontail worm design shortly thereafter.

Riverside made lots of different colored worms  . I use to buy them at Big Lots in clear with silver flake .

Very possible  that tail looks more like it. Wish I could see them out of the pack...

Fireworks, firecracker or 4th of July is some of the names I've heard that color called.

Mr. Twister should have their color charts online somewhere from all the years since they used to have a color line up like GYB back in the 80's and the Phenom worm was their most popular worm....

The color could easily simply be Clear with Blue and Red flake as GYB would call it with their grubs etc..My First thought was the Fire and ice as well but that had more blue in it....

The other companies I can think of that made curly tail worms, and their were plenty, are BPS Squirmin worms, MR. Twister Phenom, Riverside maybe, I don't remember the curly tail worm but I am sure they had one, Luck E Strike used to have worms back then that were popular, Cabela's has their own brand, and then you have all the Charlie brewer worms and Mann's etc..I see bags of old worms at flea markets that were from companies like Edge, and a bunch of others that were only around for a few years....

If you are looking for that worm, I am sure MR. Twister has it, or if not, Bass Pro has it, or check out Locket Lures which is the OEM for Big Bite and a few more companies...I like the BPS squirmin worms, I Like the tail action a little better than on the Mr. Twister worms and they are a bit heavier and come in more sizes, but if you google curly tail 6" worms clear with flake, click on google images and you can find it...It could have been 100's of companies..Many were only around for a year, heck Stren used to make soft baits.

I actually liked the squirmin worm a bunch several years ago when they still made the "purple fire tail" they call it "electric blue firetail" I think in the 8".  For some reason they DQ'ed it....

Many years ago I had some gilraker worms that were clear with red and blue flake.

I 'm probably wrong but the more I thought about this the more I believe it might have been a worm not many are familiar with. It was a  regular worm with a sickle tail made by Luck-E-Strike in a color called firecracker, back then that Cpampany didn't have yellow in their logo, it was a simple white background with black or sometimes red lettering with the worm on the hook that you see today. There are a few places that have gone under or were bought out but I can still remember the Luck-E-Strike worms because Guido Hiddon and Rick Clunn were sponsored by them at that time.

I remember having some worms in the late 80's in the color you described. The color was firecracker and there was only about 1/3 of the flake as in those Culprit Fire and Ice worms that were posted.

I use the 10" and 12" in the summer usually in grape with pink tail, red shad, and black..black and blue..but lately my favorite is the smaller 4" size on a split shot rig or shaky head....I also like a black and blue tail as my main light line skipping worm or on a light c-rig...I feel they do better in pressured lakes and ponds than say a 6" Culprit or Zoom Ribbon tail...I want to try the Robo Worm curly tails...I think they still make a 9" squirmin worm, I know the local flea market has a box of them in Junebug which I always carry, and if I want to flip them into heavy weeds, I just bite half the tail off and you have a Cut tail, more like a Cut'r worm...The cut tail worms were created by clipping of the end of ribbon tail worms...I remember as a kid going out smallmouth fishing in NY, and it was cold,  and the guide was biting the tails off a 4" culprit ribbon tail and it worked great....

I used to always carry a bag of these for "Blue bird skies" but never had much luck on them, but then again never really tried them since I had so much confidence in about a dozen culprit colors, I almost always used the laminates..I do like colors like that for clear water at times, but I love Culprit soft baits, I just started getting back into them since they have stepped up their product line recently...Black shad ribbon tails are my worm....Red Shad culprit 6" is a great worm as well...Color is all personal preference, I am sure fire and ice would work just as well as Junebug etc...

Zoom has a color named Cotton Candy that is clear with flakes in it.  There are several colors with a clear base and flakes.

Finesse, curly tail, lizzards, U-tail and maybe some other styles.

my favorite Culprit worms were fire and ice, red shad, and crawdad. the crawdad is brown with a gold "belly". i'd throw it on High Rock Lake sometimes due to the water color.  Bryan Kerchal won the BMC over there one year on a red shad.

Zoom cotton candy is another one that takes me back. i have no idea what the fish see in that color, but it works amazingly well, especially in "cleaner" water.
