Fisher Guy Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 Just bought the stella 2500 HGSFI. Want to pair it with a St croix Legend Elite Med Light 7" 2 piece? any thoughts on that set up? also what line would you recommend? Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 24, 2016 Super User Posted March 24, 2016 Sounds like an amazing setup! I'd recommend braid in 10# or 15# plus various leader sizes... 1 Quote
Fisher Guy Posted March 24, 2016 Author Posted March 24, 2016 why so heavy? isn't light weight line more sensitive? what does braid really mean? Quote

Point being, they're quite small diameter lines that are quite strong. Throwing on a 4# - 15# leader makes for some exciting fights. Braid is simply more manageable than mono/copoly/fluoro lines. Braid is a weave of spectra or dyneema lines.... 1 Quote
Fisher Guy Posted March 24, 2016 Author Posted March 24, 2016 thanks man I'm such a rookie i guess. started fishing last year when i bought a place next to a lake. i can't get enough of it. you like the st croix? also i;ll go get the stella which feels like butter spooled this weekend. So you would suggest a 10 lb braid right? Quote

S yo would suggest a 10 lb braid right? No problem! I love Croix rods, but it wasn't really until I used their upgrade program for the Avid and switched to a Legend Tournament rod. Crisp is the word for that rod! I imagine your Elite is even moreso. And I've got Stradic FI and FJ reels, not a Stella. But a Stella is a thing of beauty, you're fortunate to have one 10# braid is a fine starting point. Breaking strength is usually over 10#. I like yellow braid since it is easier to see when line watching. Quote
Fisher Guy Posted March 24, 2016 Author Posted March 24, 2016 thanks darren. been using regular 8 lbs test up until now. i;ll tell the guy at Bass pro to load 10 lb braid. is it harder to cast? 1 Quote

I think your losing some of that rod sensitivity with 2 pieces. 2 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 24, 2016 Super User Posted March 24, 2016 #8 Tatsu on top of at least half a spool of backing. Quote
Dypsis Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 I have the XG C3000SFI and it has cheap mono backing with 10lb Tatsu. 1 Quote
HookdUP Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 You're about to have yourself a good time with that set up man.... It can knock down even big redfish and snook when played right Quote
Maico1 Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 Congratulations ....Stella's are very sweet reels. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 You don't give up anything with a quality two piece. 3 Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted March 24, 2016 Super User Posted March 24, 2016 sounds like a dreamy combo to me.... line type / lb test might be better answered by what types of baits you intend on fishing with this combo? Quote
Fisher Guy Posted March 25, 2016 Author Posted March 25, 2016 fishing mostly rubber worms. Its a st croix legend elite 2 piece 7" ML. i get two piece cause i can be more mobile with it. g loomis is 1 piece and thats why i didnt get it. does 2 piece really suck compared to one piece? Quote
Dan_the_fisher Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 I usually don't go smaller than 15#, 10# braid is so small and impossible for me to tie with lol Quote
Fisher Guy Posted March 25, 2016 Author Posted March 25, 2016 ok but why braid?? 15 lb test for 3 lbs bass??? Quote

You wouldn't be able to tell a difference between a 1 piece and a 2 piece. Just make sure to take care of the rod when it's broken down. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 Braid on a spinning reel is all about sensitivity and line management. Test strength just is what it is. 1 Quote

Like DVT said, with that Legend Elite rod, you won't lose any sensitivity vs. a 1-pc rod. I have a 2-pc Legend Elite that is just as sensitive to me as my 1-pc Legend Elite. Sounds like you are getting a fantastic setup with lots of fun fishing in your future. Enjoy!! 1 Quote

Because 15# braid is much smaller than 15# mono, I'm pretty sure 15# braid is 6# mono equivalent and 10# braid is 4# equivalent. I have a very hard time managing that small of line for no benifit to me, that's why I use 15# braid. And if I go with mono I use 8# trilene xl or suffix elite. And a 3lb bass can break 20# line easily in the wrong conditions Quote
Fisher Guy Posted March 26, 2016 Author Posted March 26, 2016 ok i went with a 20 braid super slick. its bright green is that gonna screw me? Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 Not at all. Im slowly replacing my moss green with hi vis. If it makes you feel better black out the lower few feet or tie on a leader but neither is mandatory visibility wise. Quote
