For those of you with relatively recent Garmin chart plotters GPSMAP and echoMap models, there is a software update that includes Quickdraw HD map drawing software to make your own fishing maps with 1 foot contour lines.  The update is free if you download it yourself to an SD card.

As I am considering purchasing the Garmin Echomap 73 SV non chirp model ($549 closeout at BPS) which would be eligible for the Quickdraw Contours update, can anyone advise as to the process of creating maps on non-mapped lakes.

I have watched a few online videos of the process, but it doesn't really show how far out it covers on each side of the boat. I am just wondering if it is 10 feet or 20 feet or what?

Just looking for an approximate number from anyone that has used it.

Thanks!

It uses the down scan to do the mapping so I'm sure the width of the coverage depends on how deep the water is. The deeper the water the wider a path it records. Just go to the Quickdraw Contours and hit record. You need a SD memory card to record to and keep your speed under 10mph.

I just bought the 73SV too but have not had it out on the water yet.

Thanks Scott,

That makes sense that the coverage width would depend on the depth. Never thought of that.

Good luck with your 73 SV.

The depth and which transducer you are using.
