Anyone know of any killer deals on some closeout reels or discontinued models. I'm looking to get 3-4 new reels in a few gear ratios. Any suggestions on where to look or if any websites have some sweet deals. Looking for Shimano, Lews, Diawa. Absolutely NO ABU.

You think there's a difference?  They come out of different back doors of the same factory, made by the same workers, made with the same components......

Try some local mom and pop stores.  A few years back I picked up a Revo for half price because the store just didn't have the room for all of the inventory.

I mean I own $200 reels of each brand and I'm telling you there's a difference. Not so much a difference in components but there is definitely a difference in quality of design. There's a reason a lot of guys work exclusively on shimano reels and that's because if you go through them and take care of them they last forever. I'm not here to shame any abu garcia fan boys all I'm saying is I haven't had a single issue with any other reel ever.

I know they are made in the same factory, but man they feel so different to me. I love the Lew's, and the Abu's are ehh, feel very cheap.

I had nothing but trouble with all the Revo's I tried, I don't deny that. But I think your fooling yourself if you think there is a quality difference. Like I said. Same company made them, same people built them, same components went into them.  They have different options to seperate them but its so minor and none of them have anything to do with improving durability, only takedown or hook hanging do dads.  Redbird, mechanics like shimano because shimano gives them special treatment in pricing and availability of parts.  I fought for over a year to get parts they refused to support me with, but the shop down the road could get them immediately.

I don't know about the whole doyo thing as I've never been to the factory, but I worked as a machinist and at our shop we had 3 competing companies that we made parts for. The quality control standards for each company were vastly different. Each company had different standards for whether each part was good. So maybe the differences stem from more intense quality control effort from one company. I don't know for sure, but it is a possibility.

Ebay is a great place to look. I picked up new in box Daiwa Tatulas 100 in 5,6&7 gear ratios at about $94/reel. Maybe if you find a single seller that has all the gear ratios you want you could contact them and see if they would give you an additional discount.

Plus Daiwa and Huk have a promotion going on. Got me some nice free swag to wear.

I agree with you that there isn't  much of a difference in terms of overall performance and feel for the reel based on the pretty limited amount of times that I have used Doyo reels. They both feel pretty good in my hands, but I wouldn't trade my Daiwa/Shimano platforms for them. I do hear from a lot of reel techs, that Lews product last better than Abu Garcia, so maybe you are paying more for the bling through Abus, and paying for better internals through Lews.

Definitely more gaudy bits with todays asian made Abu's, for sure.  But I cannot believe that the factory has differing series of the same parts, each of differing quality. Logistically, profit mindedness...... naw. There are plenty of reel men out there that don't even know the brands come from the same table, so what they say I take with a grain of salt.
