Help me understand this philosophy

With bass gear, I've been pretty pleased with the rods I have, which are in the $200-$250 range.  That said, I'm dying to try an NRX, but don't know if I ever will.

I have reels ranging from $99 to $500, and feel the "sweet spot" is about $200.   My spinning reels are all in the $80-$100 range and I've never felt like I needed to spend more, nor have I had the urge to try a pricey one out of curiosity.  I do love baitcasting reels though, and would love to buy all high-end models if my budget allowed it.

With that said, I don't think I'd be feeling undergunned if I stuck to rods that were around $120, and the same for reels.  There seems to be a lot of great gear out there at all price points.

Bob you missed out on your NRX. I bought one the weekend of the Classic off TW normally went for $550 got it for $327. I figure I could use it for a season and if I didn't like it sell it and break even.

Got to admit I´m a real sucker for reels to the point I have 3 of those.

Good... I don't feel bad. I've got 15 years until retirement.  I should be able do drive them nuts and get my collection properly filled in....

Yes and if your reel is in that range it's likely you can buy bearings, spools, dress parts and all kinds of goodies...  The reel itself can be a blank canvas if one is so inclined.  

 

The rod you spend the money on once.  Even if it's a gorgeous custom, it's generally done only once.  The reel purchase itself could very easily just be opening a door....  A big expensive anodized and carbon fiber honeycomb door!

Always rod above reel imo, unless you are finding yourself throwing reaction type baits almost all the time. In that scenario I could see a great reel being important.
