River Dave Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 If that's the one out by Jigger my fishing partner goes there a fair amount (he lives like a mile from Cayuga Island). Hasn't been very good so far this year but neither has anyplace else from the sounds of it. Gotta' turn around sooner or later. I used to go to the old Buffalo Launch Club (or something like that) marina years ago, I think that's the same place. Quote

River Dave Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 Nicely done Jigger! My fishing partner lives on 101st so he's right over by you. I'm working all weekend but hoping to maybe get out for a bit on Tuesday. Quote
stratos122 Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 Is the dock in at lake alice? I bought some new electronics for the boat and kind of want to test them out tomorrow evening at lake alice since its not too far from home. Quote

River Dave Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 I'm cursed when it comes to SBH, I never catch anything there. Ever. Good luck Chris.  Lousy weather but still saw some boats out on the River this morning. Looked like mostly perch fishermen based on where they were fishing. Yesterday morning the weather was just gorgeous but very few boats were out. Hopefully I'll be giving a fishing report soon, gettin' antsy now. 1 Quote

River Dave Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 I used to live kinda out that way when I first got married and fished there a couple times. No surprise but I never caught much there either. I'm noticing a theme here, I fished almost everywhere over the years and never caught anything. I must have really sucked. My problem is all my good shore spots are posted and/or developed now. Some of my old South Buffalo spots are still accessible but I think all the polution finally caught up with them because the fishing isn't like it used to be. I used to live one house away from Cazenovia Creek in S Buffalo and fished it every day. That's why I bought the house, just so I could fish. Caught a ton of bass (and everything else) out of there. Fishing is terrible there now. Quote

fayegarnett Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 guys, i gotta tell you what happened today and you probably won't believe it. I was fishing at that outlet pond by Ellicott Creek Park. My friend saw a huge pike with a 2lb bass in its mouth, roaming by the bank. He asked me to go over to take a look while he took a picture of it. I went over and the pike swam away and i could barely see it. But then i tossed my wacky worm toward the direction it swam. I got a hit. my first reaction was: did my worm make the pike spit out the bass and hit my bait? I brought the fish it and it did not fight at all. It was the bass in the pike's mouth!!! It was almost dead!! I did not snag it up, i mouthhooked it as you can see from the picture. How the hell did this happen? A dying bass in the pike's mouth a second ago bit my worm? Again, how could this happen? The bass was either so sick or injured or both that after i released it, it was lying by the bank barely moving. there was missing scales and injuries all over its body and its eyes were blurred. you probably won't believe cuz i am still not so sure if it happened. 4 Quote
River Dave Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Wow that's wild. I've had pike take fish that were already hooked but never the other way around. Crazy. This cold rain is going to kill the fishing I'm afraid, really gonna' bring down the water temp. Bummer. Quote

I have this mental image of my g/f opening our bedroom window and shouting at me down in the creek that I left my socks on the floor again.  *Shivers*  1 hour ago, River Dave said:  This cold rain is going to kill the fishing I'm afraid, really gonna' bring down the water temp. Bummer. Depends on the fish you are targeting... Steelhead will be more active with the cold rain and the creeks really could use the added water flow.  I know that Bass are the main topic here, but fish are fish and they're all fun to catch.  When one species isn't active, target another.  That's the only reason I ever started fishing for Steelhead and it has quickly become my favorite. I've never actually caught a pike.  A co-worker and I are supposed to go out next weekend for pike and tiger muskie.  Not sure what to expect, but I am definitely looking forward to it. Quote
River Dave Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Lol you sound just like my buddy! He's another steelhead junkie and loves it when it's cold and rainy. I've never stream fished for them before but they must be something special for you guys to go through what you do just to catch them. My buddy is always sending me pictures of him standing in the snow with icicles in his beard holding a fish. I'll admit I don't get it but I'm obviously missing something because the people that do it seem to absolutely love it. My nephew is always driving all over the place to wade into freezing cold water for Steelies. I used to do a lot of trout/salmon fishing but it wasn't my thing so I just stick with warm weather bass and pike. I know, I know, even my own dad called me a wimp.   Buying the house so I could fish was an absolute blast while I was there but turned out to be a horrible investment. Would have been much smarter to buy somewhere else but I did enjoy my time there. I fished several times a day, every day, for 7 years. Even if I had 10 minutes to kill I would walk across the street and cast a few. Caught a ton of fish but lost my shirt when I sold the house. 1 Quote
ThinkRSX Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 "I go to church in places like this..." If the scenery and landscape doesn't take your breath away, the 8 degree temperature with 25 mph sustained winds whipping through the gorge sure will. I've lived in WNY my entire life.  I never knew we had such amazing places.  The shale lined walls of 18 mile creek, the 200 ft depth of the Niagara Gorge which you descend into using a "stairway" that looks like it was created in the 1800's, the sunrise/sunset out on Bird Island Pier, gin clear creeks which snake their way down to the lakes.  The locations are endless. Steelhead are often stingy fish, but not impossible to catch.  You combine that stinginess, with this scenery, my love for the cold weather, and a football team who hasn't made the playoffs in 16 years.. you've got yourself the makings of an avid steelie hunter. Sorry to hear about your financial loss on the house.  It seems like all things with a positive impact on fishing have a negative impact on our wallets.  G/f often jokes that she knows how much money is in my wallet based on the number of fish I caught that day. Besides the epic bass that was ninja'ed from the jaws of a pike (awesome story btw), did anybody have any luck this weekend? 3 Quote
River Dave Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 FINALLY! Been waiting all winter for this. Playing with the boat more than fishing but I'll post something when I get back to let you know how I did. I'm not expecting to catch much but will probably look around for some Pike. Â 2 Quote
