I fish weightless, or 1/16 mostly. occasionally 1/8. My carolina rig I even fish with 1/8 ounce. I have seen fishing shows and youtube videos with heavy weights to punch through weed mats. I never seem to find anywhere I could do that. Everywhere I fish if its matted on the surface it is usually thick all the way to the bottom underneath. At least it seems that way. Quote

I saw 8 bass boats with two guys per boat but the guys in the back aren't fishing. They are all together by Strawberry Island. I wonder if that's them. That was them. Most of them fished strawberry island. Hite did really well against the grand island bridge pilings. I took a crazy round about way to work just so I could travel the 190 and see KVD out there on the Nitro. 1 Quote

River Dave Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 I guess this is the first ever catch and release event so they have guys in the boat with them weighing the fish and then letting them go right away. They are launching from Anchor Marine on Grand Island. I took that picture down by the foot of Sheridan Drive in Tonawanda, I work right down the road from there. 1 Quote

And do you think you can meet them or is this like a lowkey type of thing? Quote
fayegarnett Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 the bassmaster classic bracket is stupid. there is no prize money, just the right to compete in the classic. now you have powroznik who quit after the first day because he already qualifies. but, what's more ridiculous is that his roommate Krieger who's a pound behind can't seem to catch even a single fish in three hours to advance. now the quitter might advance, lol. Quote
River Dave Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 My buddy sent me a pic of him standing with KVD so I guess you can meet them. They were posed in front of KVDs boat down at Anchor Marine so either my buddy is a stalker or you can take pics with them. Quote

ThinkRSX Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 I sure hope so because I've been down here since 2:00 waiting for them to come back. Not sure I have the courage to ask for a pic with KVD, but thought I'd get some good ones of them coming in. Powronzik basically slapped BASS in the face with the stunt he pulled. Logically, it makes sense for him, but it gives BASS a bad look, leaves fans (in a sport desperately needing attention) with a bad taste in their mouth, and it happened on the one day in which the event was "nationally televised". Quote

The whole thing would be moot for people already qualified. i am surprised KVD and B Hite even fish this hard. just throw in a hundred grand, or fifty, and it will be a lot more competitive and fun for the audience. but one thing i don't get, why did Powroznik even come? Is it because it is mandatory? 1 Quote
ThinkRSX Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 Not sure, but he was the first to the dock. He was tied up with all sorts of phone interviews afterwards. I heard him, along with the cameraman who was on his boat say some interesting things about having alternate plans tomorrow.  I managed to get 400 pics of all the anglers coming in and walking around the boat launch. I also managed to get a picture with KVD.  It was a good day. I'm really disappointed with the local media coverage... Or lack there of.  Couldn't they at least get a 10-15 second mention on the evening news? Quote

anthonyfip Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 Had a chance to take the kayak out onto lake Alice yesterday. First time there on the yak, so I wasn't expecting a whole lot until I learned the water a bit more.  I ended up with a few nice bass and a lot of big bluegill.  There were tons of huuuuge drum close to the edges, was hoping to get one on the end of my light rod but no luck. @clayton86 I believe you've mentioned Alice before?  You do pretty good there?  I saw a ton of potential, just didn't have the time to explore/experiment too much.  I'm hoping to make this my new "go to" spot since it is kayak friendly and only 30 minutes from my house (excluding all the construction) Quote
fayegarnett Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 After reading some BASS article, i stand corrected. there is prize money. the champion takes home $10,000. now what Powroznik did was even more puzzling. I don't know how he could save cost by quitting and giving up a relatively good chance to win 5k more (all competitors get 5k at least). He may not even make the cut in the next real series tourney. Quote
fayegarnett Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 this is the most exciting BASS tourney i ever watched! Tie in the last 20min and Kreiger, as he often did in the past two days, choked at clutch moments. You can tell KVD is far superior, but he played with fire today and almost burned himself by laying off some good spots for tomorrow. The facts that this happened right in Buffalo and this has become so exciting make this really the best tournament ever. The usual elite tourneys are too big and there are too many people. you tend to lose focus and patience. Quote
Titus-NT Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 Hi all, like a couple others on this forum, I'm brand new to the forum, and was enticed to join by all the great info I read here. Unlike most on this forum, Im also brand new to bass fishing. I'm born and raised in NT and have only casually fished the canal for panfish. Now that my girls are getting a bit older, and beginning to show a slight interest in fishing, I'm starting to find a little more time to get out, though still not as often as I'd like. Because I'm so new, a lot of the terms thrown around on this site, are greek to me. The extent of my bass knowledge comes from some youtube videos, reading this forum, asking some questions at Gander Mt, and catching a few branches and snagging a few rocks in the canal near the kayak launch at the Robinson St bridge. None of my friends bass fish, so I'm learning as I go here. I feel like Ive got the right equipment, (a couple 6'6" medium action rods, with 8# clear monofilament. Ive got a variety of different colored jigs, a variety of crankbaits, some spinners, and some plastic worms that Ive set up on a Texas rig). Im looking at buying a fishing kayak (my father in law has one, and I've borrowed it a time or two just to see if I like it), but I'm not opposed to fishing from shore by any means. But enough about me.... My hope is, that some of you fine folk could help put me on some fish, so I can land my first bass. I really don't have a lot of time to get out there so traveling more than 20 mintues to fish isn't ideal. Ive read about the overflow at Ellicot Crk, is that the body of water 100 yards or so from the parking lot when you pull in off Niagara Falls Blvd? And is that still active this time of year? Are there any spots on the canal in the Tonawandas that are better than others? Any other local spots or tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.  Quote

Thanks in advance. the over flow goes under creekside dr. the water comes from the canal I only fished it one time. I would say that your best bet is to fish the canal from about where the over flow is all the way to the river. If you don't have a canoe. I would just look at google maps and look at either side of the canal for open spots you can cast from. on the south side of the canal there is a bike path you may be able to cast from some spots along there? I usually put my canoe in on the north side of the canal its on sweeney st. a little before the twin city highway. there is some shore to cast here but it stays pretty shallow for a ways out and with the lack of rain even shallower.   Quote

My PB came from that lake at 8-8.  Kayak friendly because you went on a weekday the weekends that lake is a mad house with jet skiers and tubers and such. If you can make it to kenyonville bridge the west side of the bridge is usually safe from the drunks its shallow on that end of the lake. Quote
ThinkRSX Posted July 22, 2016 Posted July 22, 2016 Welcome Titus! I know exactly how you're feeling. I took my daughters fishing for the 4th of July last year, they enjoyed it, but I fell in love with it. That's when I caught bass fever and did all the things you've described. I'm always open for PM's. I may not be able to tell you how to catch fish as well as most of the people on here, but I can tell you some things to avoid doing based on my own personal blunders. i haven't had any luck at the overflow pond.  I pretty much head to Hyde Park every weekday (thanks jigger) and on the weekends I usually head to a few ponds in Lancaster. I live in Kenmore, so nowhere is really that close except for the river. I like Hyde because I know that there's always going to be little 1 lb'ers there which gives me a chance to practice with a specific lure or technique. Id pick 4-5 types of lures and work on those before moving to others . 1. Soft plastics 2. Crankbaits 3. Topwaters (Buzbaits, frogs) 4. 5. Always try to talk to everyone you pass on the banks who has a rod in their hand. Use resources like bass resource articles for information. Also, if you're absent minded like me, write EVERYTHING down in a journal. Refer to it when uncertain or when bored on a conference call. Probably the most important thing I can say and the most frustrating... There's no "right" answer. There's no right way, just try everything and make your own assessment. Quote

stratos122 Posted July 22, 2016 Posted July 22, 2016 I used to fish Alice all the time myself like Clayton said lake is a mad house on weekends way too many recreational boaters on that small of lake. When i fished the lake all the time i would fish the island and work the weedline next to that and then straight across the lake i would get some nice bass. If i had time on weekdays in the evenings i would still fish i just got sick of all the recreational boaters and stopped going been about a year since i have been there. Quote
Titus-NT Posted July 24, 2016 Posted July 24, 2016 Tried the overflow at Ellicot Creek this evening. Got skunked. My first time there, the little I do know about bass, I thought it looked perfect. Couple logs on the banks. Lots of tall grass on the bank, a good number of Lilly pads. Heard plenty of frogs croaking so I tried a hollow bodied frog. No luck. Threw some cranks and tried a Texas rigged plastic. Still no luck. Think I'll try Hyde Park next. Quote
