River Dave Posted June 23, 2016 Posted June 23, 2016 Heading to Florida later today, wish me luck! No idea what to bring so I loaded a little Tupperware container with a little bit of everything and will see if saltwater fish like bass lures. Won't get to actually bass fish but hopefully get some snook or small tarpon. I'll be happy with anything I get. Never caught a saltwater fish before. 1 Quote

I did manage one good day out on the boat, but the bite from shore and the surf was virtually non-existent.  Had some barracuda and yellow fin tuna.  All together, it was a good trip but the fishing left a little to be desired. 2 Quote

ThinkRSX Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 I was at the overflow pond on Thursday for about 30 mins. Â I went to 5 other spots on the Niagara and the boat harbor... skunked. Yesterday I went out with my daughter and she killed it on the bluegill. Â She had 24 bluegill in 2 hours. Â I managed to pull in a 2 lb Largemouth. Â I finally hooked up with a LM on a topwater frog (its been a fantasy of mine) but he spit the hook. Â I posted a link to the video below. Today I went back to look for that pig which hit my frog. Â I wasn't able to catch him... however, I landed a hog and my PB for a largemouth. Â He was 22" and weighed 6 lbs 1 oz. Yak716 Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 Hey guys newbie here. I just started fishing last year along with kayaking and have mostly fished in the Buffalo River and have caught some monster sheepshead under the silos and the occasional large mouth but I really want to start catching monster large mouths and smallies. I prefer fishing from my kayak and don't mind launching from anywhere. Anyone have any kayak specific spots? Today I was shore fishing from jiggers spot next the north GI bridge and didn't  have one bite over 2 hours. Before there I was at Hyde park and caught 2 12 inch largemouths. Before that I did the overflow pond for an hour but no bites. Am I just a really crappy fisherman? Im using everything from Texas rigged senkos, craws, chatters, tube jigs, and the only thing I caught the two largemouths on was a black n blue pro jig craw. Any tips? Thanks. Quote
ThinkRSX Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 I feel your pain. I'll have amazing days and then the next day I can't even entice a bite.  When it comes to the Niagara, I just plain fail. One technique I like to use in the ponds and creeks is to use a "power lure", like a crankbait, spinnerbait, buzzbait, or even a top water, until I see something tracking my lure back to shore. Once I know where the fish are, then I swap to a "finesse lure" like a Texas rigged worm or (my favorite) a tube jig. You can cover a lot more water with the retrieval lures which will put you on the fish that much faster. If you want to be lazy like me, you can just go out and get yourself a "Deeper" or another portable sonar unit.  Deeper has an arm that you clamp right to your kayak that you attach the sonar to. I'm sure the others make similar accessories as well. Quote
Justjigger Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 Small boat harbor with a kayak is great for smallies...tube jigs and mister twisters work great.....most bass I caught this year was on a Texas rigged watermelon redflake baby brushhog. I think the over flow is over fished now I won't be going back there...hyde park has been great....gonna go on Saturday with my flyrod 1 Quote
ThinkRSX Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 I'm about try Hyde Park.  I've never been here and I'm not really sure where the great spots are but I'm going to start at the kayak ramp at the north side of the park.  Update:. Pulled in 4 largemouth but none of them were over 1 lb. Quote

I was fishing from the exact same spot as RSX and caught the same size as him. Also all my buddies that yak fish in the small boat harbor say this year has been awful in there but I'm planning on hitting it this week. Quote
Yak716 Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 Also just figured out how to post pics. I caught my PB 17 inch largemouth (newbie) the other evening on a watermelon craw in one of my Buffalo river spots. Anyone else here fish the buffalo river? Quote

Going to head to Hyde Park shortly to get me a 4-5 pounder! Im surprised the fish at Hyde aren't bigger than that being as they have such a wide variety of trash to choose from when it comes to meal time. Â Yesterday I was pulling in plastic bags, trash bags,a sock, paper, cardboard, & paper towels. Â Your really need a hazmat suit of you plan on fishing there. Quote

Yak716 Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Pretty quiet in here lately. Â Where has everyone been fishing or has the heat kept everyone away? Â or is everyone just playing Pokemon Go? Â Quote
Sean Barbour Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 (edited) Hi Im Sean New to this site and just spent the last three hours reading this thread. Fishing is my life, I fish all year round and pretty much every day. Started fishing at about three years old. Fish mostly small lakes and ponds from shore or inflatable canoe. I fish for everything big but summer is mostly bass. I am 95% catch and release but I will eat a fish if its mortally wounded or I am out with someone who is looking for dinner. It is nice to meet any and all of you. Fishing has been slower for me than most years. I was going to take a long drive tomorrow ( I don't mind doing so for a new spot). I originally was going to try almond lake in Hornell for the first time or I saw some ponds in Zoar valley that looked promising. Then I had the idea to check closer to home first because I like long drives to new spots where I catch fish but a long drive with no fish is harder to be positive about! I put "wny pond fishing" in a search engine and ended up here. I have been studying this post for the last three hours trying to figure out where to fish tomorrow? I think I may try some pond in Lancaster for the first time first. Then maybe try some of the spots along the upper river I read here. I know most of the post talking about catching in the upper river are from may and june so the fish may not be by the grand island bridge? weeds are never a problem I am most comfortable in heavy cover. happy to talk to anyone about fishing. We will see how I do tomorrow. I tried to upload a pic hate the one from Facebook I am never on there. Says file is to big? Yak716 I will fish no matter what! heat or weather be damned lol. I am actually looking forward to fishing in the rain tomarrow! let it pour!!!!!!!!! Edited July 14, 2016 by Sean Barbour spelling Quote
ThinkRSX Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Welcome Sean!  Nice to see more WNY anglers on the scene. I fished the Upper Niagara at the foot of Ontario yesterday, got skunked, but no big surprise since the river always kicks my butt. Next week when the Bassmaster Elite are fishing the upper river, I plan to watch/record KVD's every move and hopefully gain a few new spots! Ha Tuesday I caught a few 1 lb'ers on a pond.  The heat has decreased the bite rate, but it hasn't killed it entirely.  Just have to go deep. Is there anyone in our group here who has a 2 kayaks for fishing?  I was thinking about buying my own, but I didn't want to make that decision without ever trying to fish from one.  I was hoping someone would have 2 and would be kind enough to spend an afternoon teaching me about 'yak fishin'. Sean Barbour Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 I have two inflatables one is canoe shaped one is more kayak shaped. I used to have hard body canoes but sold them because I found hard bodied ones I sometimes didn't want to go through the trouble of putting on the car and strapping down. I do way better on the lower niagara than the upper.I only seem to get skunked between jan,- march but I think its mostly because i haven't taken the time to teach myself center pinning even though I have the equipment. I did really well in the outer harbor last year from shore this year I did ok. 1 Quote
716RAVEN Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Been a busy summer. Fishing has been great though when i do get the chance to get out.. Quote
