BuffaloBass716 Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 I also found a productive spot for smallmouth, last spring it gave up a 20" monster... same story this year. They seemed to be stacked up in this spot, its near baitfish hugging the shore line and the bottom is full of big rocks. Hopefully heading out all day tomorrow to a few river spots and maybe the overflow pond. Quote
Justjigger Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 I'll be at my spot on the river tomorrow morning...Gotta catch while they been hot Quote
Justjigger Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 Largemouth or smallmouth what is your go to lure? Quote
John Gustas Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 10 hours ago, Justjigger said: What u catch them on? 4" white yama hula grub with a small shaky head for fish #1. Then I downsized to a 3" green pumpkin grub (again with a small shaky head) and dipped the tail in chartreuse garlic dye. Caught them much faster on this. 8 hours ago, BuffaloBass716 said: I also found a productive spot for smallmouth, last spring it gave up a 20" monster... same story this year. Maybe try there, too? Good luck today guys! Quote

BuffaloBass716 Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 The river was good to me today. Went out this morning until lunch time to some of my productive spots. Managed 8 decent smallmouth and missed 3 more, the best two are in the pictures, guessing both were pushing 4lbs. All fish were super healthy and above keeper size and they were all caught on the same rig. The bite itself was so subtle for all the fish that it just felt like weight on the end of the line until I set the hook. It's looking like they are really becoming more active but this weekend's weather looks awful, hoping that it doesn't screw everything up for next week. Anyone else find any big browns today? 2 Quote

Great freaking day for all! Oh hey, nice meeting you yesterday!! After you left there was not much going on. Everyone was throwing power fishing stuff and the fish had probably seen them all. Not many people caught anything. A guy did land one on a big chatterbait. This pond has easily 15 people fishing at once between 5pm and 8pm now. Real high pressure. Quote

It's nice to meet local fisherman and share tips. 1 Quote
fayegarnett Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 guys, do use fluoro lines to catch smallies in the river? Will braid do? Quote
John Gustas Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 1 hour ago, fayegarnett said: guys, do use fluoro lines to catch smallies in the river? Will braid do? I like braid for rivers because it's not buoyant and has no stretch, allows for direct contact with the fish. Also, sometimes I tie on a flouro leader if they're finicky. Double uni knot or Albright, usually. Quote
River Dave Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 23 hours ago, fayegarnett said: guys, do use fluoro lines to catch smallies in the river? Will braid do? Yea I've used braid in the River for years. Caught a ton of smallies on it. I'm going to try flouro leaders on a couple of rods this year just because of abrasion issues. I keep breaking off on T rigs and all I can think is the sinker sliding up and down the line is the problem. Killed me last year . I have some spinning rods spooled with mono and that also catches a lot of fish in the River. 1 Quote
River Dave Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 Finally heading out for the first real fishing trip of the year tomorrow. Finished up a ton of projects around the house and was able to free up some time so Silver Lake here I come. Haven't been there in over 20 years and aren't expecting great results but I definitely want to check it out. I know some guys are killing it there lately but I think I'm unprepared as far as lures and colors go. I always fish the River so almost everything I own is either silver, white, or perch (for when I fish Cayaga Lake) and it sounds like jerkbaits and bluegill patterns are the favorites at Silver Lake. I don't have either but I'll make do and if nothing else hopefully I'll catch some pike. I'll post something when I get home and let you know how I did. I like to fish weeds and it sounds like this lake has zero right now but I think I'll like this lake more as the season progresses, just kind of checking it out for now. I'm just looking forward to a day on the boat. I can't wait. 2 Quote

River Dave Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 Oh man I love Cayaga. What part of the lake are you going to? The past couple of summers we got a cottage on the East side of the North end near Union Springs where the BASS tournaments run out of. Some great fishing and great scenery in that lake . I can hook you up with some spots but I don't know if they would produce now, we always went in August. Quote
